Mirror Staff Albums of the Year

for all the dogs - Drake

By Ava Finn

Released: October 6, 2023

Favorite Song: Rich Baby Daddy (feat. Sexyy Red & SZA)

For All The Dogs, Drake's highly anticipated hip hop and rap album, thoroughly delivers. Drake has been a staple of the music industry for a long time, now, and is one of the most successful rappers of our generation. He's created many viral and popular songs throughout his career. Many of the tracks on his new album are collaborations, such as "Calling for you" with 21 Savage, "First Person Shooter" with J. Cole, "Slime You Out" with SZA, and lastly "Rich Baby Daddy" with Sexxy Red and SZA. One of my favorites is "Virginia Beach." This song will hook you with its intro and the backing track. Another great song on the album is "8am in Charlotte." It's different (in a good way) from the rest of the songs on the album. One of the most popular songs is "Rich Baby Daddy" (feat. Sexxy Red and SZA). This song has become a fan favorite. The verses, performed by Sexxy Red and SZA, mesh very well with the beat and Drake's voice. If you appreciate a variety of beats and rhythms like I do, For All The Dogs is the best album of the year.

Get up - New jeans

By Max Vo (Mirror Correspondent)

Released: July 21. 2023

Favorite Song: Super Shy

In mid-summer, five-member K-POP girl group NewJeans released their second mini-album ‘Get Up,’ consisting of hit tracks such as  “Super Shy” and  “ETA”, which would later be performed at global festivals and award shows. With the album– and their entire discography– having varying songs drawing from hip-hop, synth-pop, and R&B genres, the alluring songs have drawn attention and love from all over the world, with their album reaching over a billion plays in total on Spotify. Singing in both Korean and English, NewJeans’ youthful voices complement the simple, yet catchy instrumentals that separate them from modern K-POP. Their music videos for each song display their dare I say god-like visuals, but invoke a nostalgic and refreshing feeling in viewers, gaining an unmatched liking from K-POP but also global fans. NewJeans is integrating the K-POP scene into the world. Through their twists in genre and style, they have certainly caught the world’s and my attention,  and we’re excited for what they release in the future.

Guts - Olivia Rodrigo

By Molly Downey

Released: September 8, 2023

Favorite Songs: lacy, bad idea right?

Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, Guts, is a satisfying listen that assists in developing her style. Guts is her second studio album after her debut release, Sour, chartered insanely high on highlights of the year lists. Similar to her last album, numerous critics and publications listed Guts in their year-end ranking of the best albums of 2023, often inside the top-ten. As an already big Rodrigo fan, I was ecstatic to listen to her new release when it came out and found these reviews to be completely accurate. The album explores a new genre of music for Rodrigo, as it consists of a mix of slower soft songs like “vampire” and upbeat 90’s rock-esc vibes like “all american bitch”. The album was popular among teenagers, with Rodrigo’s ability to clearly convey her emotional range in each and every song, easily connectable to the teenage experience. My personal favorites are, “bad idea right?”,  featuring rage- filled lyrics that perfectly encapsulate Rodrigo’s strong emotions. In contrast, I also fell in love with the song “lacy”, as the soft background music immediately grasped my attention due to its stark difference in sound from the rest of the album, and had a much deeper meaning as she told the story about a tragic time in her life. I would recommend this album for anyone who likes Sour, as it may be a different type of music but it shows the growth of Rodrigo over the few years in between albums. Her lyrical skills have become undeniably comparable to larger artists like Taylor Swift, and Guts has a lot to offer.

Let’s Start Here - Lil Yatchy

By Bradan Donahue

Released: January 27, 2023

Favorite Song: drive ME crazy!

Let’s Start Here was possibly last year’s most surprising release, as it sees rapper Lil Yachty challenge himself and take his music career in a new direction. A challenge that proved successful, as it resulted in one of the best modern alternative/psychedelic rock albums. Yachty took a great deal of inspiration from albums such as Pink Floyd’s 1973 classic, “The Dark Side of the Moon,” but was able to make it very much his own and unlike anything other artists are currently putting out. As stated in the title, “Let’s Start Here,” this is a much needed new beginning for Yachty after a dramatic decline in his popularity and success over the past few years. Despite the rebranding, he didn’t completely abandon his roots as there are moments throughout the album that he does use some similar lyrics and rap-like flows, and releasing a number of rap tracks since the release of this record. Throughout the album’s 14-song tracklist there are only five featured artists; Teezo Touchdown, Daniel Caesar, Diana Gordon, Fousheé, and Justine Skye who are all able to hold their own and supply the album with vibrant vocals. Another standout aspect is the experimental, spacy instrumentation that is given time to not only breathe, but shine such as in the record’s first track “the BLACK seminole.” Yachty had a clear creative direction that he wanted to take this album in and it is clear that he put a lot of time and effort into this project, and his passion produced one of the best albums of last year.

Like...? - Ice Spice

By: Mary Stronach

Released: January 20, 2023

Favorite Song: Deli

This album attracts Gen Z with its consistent, catchy, and relatable lyrics. Ice spice first gained popularity on her song “Munch” through Tiktok. Her career catapulted from there and her songs are constantly used as “viral sounds” on the app. TikTok definitely helped Ice Spice gain followers for this album, but that's not the only reason she has been noticed. She commands the audience with her fast-paced and intriguing lyrics. My favorite line from the album has to be from her song “Deli.” Ice Spice commands her audience when singing, “If you ain’t cookin' then get off the pot. My name is Ice Spice but I always stay hot”. This is one of many examples where Ice Spice expresses herself, attracting her audience to her direct and confident style. Through many of the 11 songs she is able to present a unique rhythm and different meanings behind her lyrics, not to mention her thrilling and extremely original names, such as “In Ha Mood”, “Bikini Bottom”, or previously mentioned “Deli”. These different names make the songs even more intriguing. I'm excited to see what Ice Spice’s growing career will bring to 2024!

One thing at a time- morgan wallen

By: Keira Murphy Clinton

Released: March 3, 2023

Favorite Song: Everything I Love

Even if you aren’t the biggest country fan, you’ll certainly want to listen to Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time album. Wallen is a country music singer and songwriter who got his big break on season six of The Voice. People instantly fell in love with his genuine lyrics and unique beat to all his songs. The album “One Thing at a Time.” which was released in early March, takes listeners through a ride of emotions with upbeat and fast paced songs like “Everything I Love” and “Cowgirls. ” These songs contrast with a list of slow, emotional, and heartfelt tracks such as “98 Braves” and “Dying Man.” A highlight of the album, “Last Night”, is understandably the most popular song. The song starts off with a catchy guitar tune which sets it up for a fun energetic song. Although “Last Night” is great,  “Everything I Love” and “I Wrote the Book” are the best songs on the album. “Everything I Love” has a unique cheerful tune that stands out from the rest of the album and “I Wrote the Book” has creative lyrics that I find to be relatable. Wallen has a consistent storyline present within his album, which he easily expresses with his singing. Due to his increasing popularity, Wallen took his album on the road with the “One Thing at a Time Tour.” After listening to the whole album and falling in love, I was very excited for the “One Thing at a Time Tour” and it definitely did not disappoint. The atmosphere at the concert was great and my favorite song live was “Ain't That Some” due to the high energy of the crowd belting out the lyrics. I can’t wait to see what Wallen produces next!

Red Moon in venus- Kali Uchis

By Emily Gallagher

Released: March 3, 2023

Favorite Song: Moonlight

Kali Uchis’ third studio album, Red Moon in Venus, includes arguably her most repertoire to date. The definition of a no-skip album, Red Moon is an exploration of the many forms of love within 15 tracks. Not only does Uchis’ gorgeous voice contribute to the thoughtfulness of the music, her lyrics themselves read like poetry. In one song, “Blue”, Uchis sings, “What’s the point of all the pretty things in the world/if I can’t have you.”  Uchis has an easily recognizable voice, and her uniqueness as a vocalist truly shines throughout this project. She seamlessly blends singing in Spanish and English to create a rich and smooth sound, and demonstrates her skilled range: not only vocally, but also stylistically. With many artists’ albums, certain tracks feel out of place, or forced, especially when considering features from other artists. However, Red Moon in Venus is a carefully crafted production- each song contributes perfectly to the overall feeling of the album, and transitions fluidly. “Moonlight”, the most popular track on the album, is also the strongest- an elegant melody mixed with loud instrumentals create an incredibly catchy song. “Fantasy”, featuring Don Toliver, is another highlight of the album- Toliver’s and Uchis’ voices contrast well in their individual parts of the song, and the background instruments create an afrobeat- like sound, adding a high energy feel. Overall, this album was an impressive addition to Kali Uchis’ career. A work of vocal art, Red Moon in Venus showcases Uchis’ immense talent, and only gets better with each listen.

Stick Season (we'll all be here forever)- Noah Kahan

By Fiona McCafferty

Released: June 9. 2023

Favorite song: Homesick

On June 9, 2023 Noah Kahan added six new songs to his album, Stick Season, that came out in 2022 titled Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever). One of the most memorable songs was “Dialed Drunk”, which made the billboard 100 coming in at number 43. This song featured popular singer, Post Malone and incorporated components of folk and pop. This was not the only song with features. as Kahan also collabed with Gracie Abrams and Hozier which added character and new sounds to his songs. The additions on the album made it well rounded and even more enjoyable to listen to as it brought elements from his hometown and staples of living in New England. Some highlights of the album are “Northern Attitude” with its fascinating instrumental beginning and Homesick which has very catchy lyrics and an unbelievable build up that makes you continue to turn the volume up. Lastly, he extended the song “The view between villages” spotlighting his voice showcasing a range of emotion.

The record- Boygenius

By Mia Owens

Released: March 31, 2023

Favorite Song: Leonard Cohen

The Record, by Boygenius, was released in March of last year has taken the music industry by storm, topping charts around the world and receiving several nominations.  Crafted by the already successfully talented solo artists, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, the album brought something new and exciting to the world of music. The production was nothing short of unique and varied. If listening to "$20" you could get a taste of rock or if you were in more of a mellow mood " Letter to An Old Poet"  would be a good choice for you. Having listened  to the 3 artists individually really helped pinpoint where this diversity in sound and style came from, and seeing them all come together and blend made this a really special album for new fans and old fans alike. This album means so much to me for so many reasons, but one  of the biggest being the impact and the reach of the lyrics. The lyrics are so widely relatable, and reach to so many groups of people in so many situations. Another unique aspect of this album is the recurring theme of friendship in songs, which can be hard to find in the music industry today. "Without you without them", the first track on the record, featured lyrics such as "I want to hear your story and be apart of it," showcased a good example the love shared amongst the trio. Overall, I strongly recommend you consider checking out not only this album, but some of their other work together.

Utopia- Travis Scott

By Chris Chen

Released: July 28, 2023

Favorite song: THANK GOD

Travis Scott's UTOPIA had been highly anticipated since the release of his previous triple-platinum album, Astroworld. Fans have waited for the UTOPIA's release for five years. Now that the wait is over, opinions are polarized. The album features top-tier artists, including Drake, Beyonce, 21 Savage, Future, SZA, Playboi Carti, Kid Cudi, and Bad Bunny. Much of the criticism towards UTOPIA is due to high expectations, especially after the overwhelming success of Astroworld. However, the album, according to this critic, is very solid with little to no skips. The “Circus Maximus Tour” has been unanimously considered very popular, fulfilling Scott’s reputation for holding rowdy and high-energy concerts. A common theme among the tracks on the project involves a 2-minute intro, giving a rather relaxing tempo, deriving from indie and rock. In true Travis Scott fashion, the song abruptly switches its mood, transitioning from soft somewhat lo-fi beat to the harsher drums, providing a true course for Scott to rap. “K-POP” (ft. Bad Bunny) is the most streamed song on the release (no surprise), followed by “MELTDOWN” (ft. Drake) and then “FE!N” (ft. Playboi Carti). I consider “DELRESTO” (ft. Beyonce) to be the worst and “THANK GOD” (ft. Teezo Touchdown) to be the best on the album.

Wallsocket- underscores

By Jack Dowdall

Released: September 22, 2023

Favorite song: Locals (Girls like us) [with gabby start]

Underscores' most recent project, the beautifully crafted and experimental Wallsocket, is an indie-pop album about a town that doesn't exist. While Wallsocket, Michigan isn't a real place - its residents could be real as many of their small-town struggles mirror those of our country. Using each track as a glimpse into the lives of Wallsocket's residents- underscores is able to vividly personify such issues as addiction, parasocial relationships, and dysphoria through her lyrics in an impressive feat of songwriting prowess. Every song is unique both instrumentally and thematically, brimming with creativity across twelve tracks that range from the loud, high-energy album opener about bank robbery to a chilling guitar-backed ballad, "Good luck final girl" closing things out. Due to this lack of a very obvious sonic throughline, some may find the album to feel disjointed, especially if they struggle to follow it's concept. However, this variety between each track creates countless memorable moments- my favorites of which included the electropop banger "Locals (Girls Like Us)," featuring a verse from the wonderful Gabby Start, the haunting "You don't even know who I am," a song written from the perspective of a stalker, Jane Remover's gorgeous feature vocals on “Uncanny long arms”, and the lyrically dissonant "Johnny johnny johnny," a song so catchy you almost forget it's about getting groomed. Wallsocket's loosely narrative structure creates an opportunity for underscores to explore these various themes in a manner that'd likely feel clunky or corny if executed with less expertise. Seeing how much underscores has already evolved as an artist over her career only deepens my excitement to see where she takes her music next. Being one of the many formerly hyperpop-adjacent artists currently trying to reinvent their sound and image, it's nice to see underscores hasn't completely abandoned or even tried to distance herself from the chronically-online scene, with tracks like "Old money bitch" calling back to her more electronic roots. "Uncanny long arms" even directly interpolates the 2nd verse of "Kinko's field trip 2006" as its outro in an immensely satisfying moment of reference to her earlier work. Wallsocket is a powerfully thematic and well produced body of work, demonstrating underscores’ artistic maturity and refinement in grand fashion.

Zach Bryan- Zach Bryan

By Alaina Martin

Released: August 25, 2023

Favorite Songs:  Fear and Fridays, Hey Driver

Zach Bryan's eponymous album is never short on emotion. The 16 songs (and one poem) on the record are more than just heartbreak songs, they are songs with deep meanings. He sings about God, friends, love, work, and childhood. None are disappointing. The album has a more of a laid-back vibe compared to his previous releases, which may come as a bit of a surprise, initially. However, nearly every song is catchy and enjoyable. Bryan successfully takes issues with his own life and creates a masterpiece about his past experiences. Some of the songs even reached top billboard charts by the end of 2023, including “I Remember Everything” (No.1) followed by “Hey Driver” (No.14).

1989 (Taylor's Version)- Taylor Swift

By Sophie Piro

Released: October 27, 2023

Favorite Song: Is It Over Now

1989 (Taylor's Version) is a re-recording of Taylor’s original album, 1989. Taylor puts a new spin on the songs from her previous album and adds five fresh tracks. Released almost 10 years after the original, 1989 (Taylor's Version) is a mix of upbeat, catchy songs, and heartbreaking, sad songs. A standout aspect of the album were the lyrics. After all, Taylor is known for her astonishing songwriting skills. When you really listen to what Taylor has written, you realize how meaningful her writing is. For example, my first impression of “Is It Over Now”, my personal favorite track on the album, was a catchy and fun song. However, when listening closer I realized the song was about heartbreak and a messy break up. This album has a more melancholy feel, which makes it different from her original album. The five songs she released from “the vault” are sad love songs that seem very personal to Taylor. The vault tracks are songs that Taylor wrote and produced in 2014, but wasn’t able to publish when 1989 was originally released. The sound of the songs is more organic instead of professionally produced, which makes them sound better and more authentic. If you love synth-pop music that is fun to sing along to and will cheer you up when you're having a bad day, this is the album for you!
