Lizzo on stage at the TD Garden on September 30th.
Lizzo brought the heat and energy to the TD Garden on September 30th on her stop in Boston for the “Special Tour.”
Rising out of the stage in a cloud of smoke in her dazzling neon yellow bodysuit, Lizzo opened the show with her new song, “The Sign.” In this song, Lizzo talks about being home since 2020, and how she is now back. Lizzo surely showed everyone that she is really back, lighting up the stage with energy and positivity right from the beginning of the show. To follow the opening song, Lizzo fired up the crowd by performing her current hit song “2 Be Loved.” These two songs brought out the enthusiasm in the crowd and were a great start to the night.
Throughout the concert, Lizzo kept the energy up. From her amazing vocals to her astounding flute performances, Lizzo had the crowd on their feet the whole time and never stopped impressing. Lizzo’s Emmy award-winning backup dancers the “Big Grrrls” danced with hard hitting enthusiasm and athleticism, proving that you don’t have to be petite to be great dancers. The vibrant set, with its strobing lights, colors, smoke, and giant disco ball, added to the electric vibe of the show. Lizzo’s incredible outfits, including sparkly and glittery bodysuits and dresses, added to the party atmosphere and supported her message of body positivity.
The theme of the night was definitely celebrating that each individual is special in their own unique way. A giant screen projecting images of Lizzo and videos helped Lizzo get her message that everyone is special across to the audience. At one point in the evening, Lizzo had the audience repeat the mantra, “I love you! You are beautiful. And you can do anything,” while the same words were displayed on the large screen. She then launched into her new song “Special,” singing “[i]n case nobody told you today, you’re special” to the audience. Even playing to a full TD Garden, Lizzo engaged with the audience throughout the night, bringing one lucky fan on stage to sing “Happy Birthday” to her and complimenting the outfits of many of her fans all the way up in the balcony seats. During her song “Coldplay,” Lizzo even gave roses to many of her fans in the pit area in front of the stage, showing her love and appreciation for everyone.
Lizzo wasn’t the only one showing the love during the night. Boston also showed Lizzo a lot of love, cheering, singing, and dancing along all night long. At one point in the night, fans even gave Lizzo a cutout of her celebrity crush, Chris Evans, with a Bruins shirt on and a sign around his neck that said, “Welcome to Boston Lizzo.” Lizzo and her Big Grrrls proceeded to dance with the fake Chris Evans, and the Boston crowd went wild.
Getting close to the end of her performance, Lizzo raised the bar even higher, performing fast-paced hits “Truth Hurts,” “Good As Hell,” and “Juice.” Before launching into her breakout hit song “Truth Hurts,” Lizzo encouraged the audience not to give up on their dreams by talking about how the song was released in September 2017, but didn’t become popular until 2019, when it eventually spent seven weeks as a number one hit, earning her a Guinness World Record for the longest-running number-one solo song by a female rapper.
This song definitely lived up to its hype, with the audience belting out the lyrics and Lizzo treating the crowd to a flute solo, showing that she can do more than just sing and dance. During Lizzo’s performance of “Juice,” the choreography was incredible and the dancers had so much energy, pumping the crowd up with excitement. Lastly, to put an end to the great night Lizzo performed. “About Damn Time.” The energy in the crowd was electric as everyone was jumping up and down singing the lyrics. It was certainly a perfect ending to a fabulous show.
