Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White, which came out on March 21st, was neither highly rated nor highly anticipated. In fact, months before it was released, the film was attacked all over social media.
One of the controversies concerned Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White. The original story is set in 19th-century Germany, featuring a petite white girl with a black bob. As an actress with Colombian heritage, Zegler was criticized for playing the role because of her race.
Disney also decided to update Snow White's personality this time around. Instead of being a damsel in distress who gets kissed by a random prince, Snow White is a fearsome and independent girl who stands up for what she believes in. According to some critics, the original fairytale-like mood of the movie was completely washed away.
Additionally, Zegler made some comments about the original story that drew criticism. She called the original tale “weird” and criticized Snow White because she falls in love with a man who creepily kisses her while she is asleep. However, Snow White ends up having a lover in the new film. He is not a prince, but the leader of a group of woodland bandits. He still kisses her when she is asleep, although he gets to know Snow White throughout the story, so he's not exactly a stranger.
Another controversy involved the Seven Dwarfs. Instead of casting actual dwarfs to play the parts, Disney decided to make them CGI. Ironically, George Appleby, who has achondroplasia (which causes dwarfism), did not play one of the Dwarfs but rather one of the seven bandits in the movie, who are rebels fighting against the Evil Queen. He is shorter than all the others, which leaves viewers confused as to why he was not cast to play one of the Seven Dwarfs.
Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, was criticized for supporting her home country of Israel. With the Palestinian-Israeli war going on, some were not happy with her positions. In this writer's opinion, however, an actor’s beliefs should not determine whether or not they are fit for a role. Instead, critics should focus on their acting and overall portrayal.
This is not the first time Disney has faced criticism for its remakes. The Little Mermaid faced similar criticism because the actress who played Ariel (Halle Bailey) was African American.
I don’t understand why people care about the race of an actor. As long as they play the character well, who cares what they look like? I also don’t think that Disney changes to the original film is a bad thing. If Disney made the movie just like the original, no one would want to see it. After all, remakes are supposed to add a new spin.
As someone who went to see the movie in the theater, I don’t understand the negative reviews. I found it very entertaining. Okay, the music may have been a little cheesy, but that's to be expected in a Disney film. And their movies always have happy endings!
Mostly, I enjoyed it because of Zegler’s portrayal of Snow White. She has a beautiful voice and is a great choice for the role. Neither she nor the movie deserves the hate and criticism they've endured.
