Out With The Old, in With The New Library

A work in progress: the new and improved DHS library will be opening in October.

DHS Librarian Alice Johnson's determination for a new and improved modern library held strong, even through the pushback of COVID-19. After a six-year wait, she finally got her wish.

When renovation was approved last year, a temporary library was set up in the back gym while the existing library was completely torn down (excluding classrooms D301 and D305). The entire space, including these rooms, has been remodeled with new carpet, lights, and a new paint color, taking the room from neon orange to DHS' staple color, maroon.

The space is also more accessible for everyone now, as the elevator is not a challenge to access anymore, and the inconvenience of having to pass through a classroom from the back stairs entrance is no longer an issue.

“The library is definitely more welcoming now to everyone than before,” said Johnson.n

The furniture has also being upgraded, including new tables and chairs that will be moveable. This will allow the library to support a variety of needs and activities, from individual to small group to multiple class visits.

The library also hopes to offer expanded makerspace activities, such as button-making, robotics, origami, duct-tape projects, knitting, and 3D printing. There will also be projection screens and collaborative tech tables available.

As you read this, the library is almost through its final certifications and upgrades. Hopefully, students will be able to utilize the new facility starting next week!t
