The student plungers!
DHS hosted a Polar Plunge challenge on March 19th. Organized by the Dedham chapter of Best Buddies, the event raised money for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts, a global sports movement that supports inclusivity and unification in sports.
The Special Olympics organization supplied a mobile tank full of cold water (48 degrees) that was parked in the end-zone lot.
There was a total of 56 participants, making up seven teams that consisted of students, staff, Dedham Police, and community members.
Senior Amanda Ferhani has worked closely with the Special Olympics organization for years and was vital to the success of this event.
“Joining the Special Olympics organization has been life-changing,” she said in her pre-event speech.
Following speeches from Ferhani and other members of Special Olympics, awards were announced.
Ms. Gavrity raised $695, winning the award for most money raised as an individual.
The Best Buddies Leadership Team raised $2,075, winning the award for most money raised as a team.
The “Best Costumes” award went to the Lucky Leprechauns, a team consisting of Ms. McGrann, Ms. McPhee, and Ms. Antonuccio.
Overall, the event was a big success, raising $8,186 for the cause, well over achieving the original goal of $2,500.
