Met Gala - 2022

The Met Gala, usually referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out”, was held on May 2nd, 2022 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, New York City. The purpose of the Met Gala is referred back to its establishment in 1948 by publicist Eleanor Lambert to raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. Occurring once a year, a new theme is always introduced at each event. The red carpet theme of this year looks at American historical fashion; “In America:An Anthology of Fashion.” The dress code was “Gilded Glamor”, which refers back to America’s historic “Gilded Age.” The Gilded Age is a time period considered to be held from the 1870s to the early 1900s. Coined by Mark Twain the term “Gilded Age” stands for a time period that was golden on the surface but corrupt underneath, or in historical terms an explosive economic and industrial growth, followed by great political corruption.

Fashion during this time period is widely renowned to be grand and over the top, which is an ultimate reflection of the influx of clothing materials such as silk, tulle, and lace. Iconic elements of fashion during this era also included the bustle, corsets, long-boned bodices, décolleté-cuts, dress suits, black frock coats, and top hats. Color schemes during this era had extravagant autumn tones and a dark romance palette. Now that we have a basic understanding let's take a look at some of the best and worst dressed celebrities at the Met Gala.
