How do you go about talking politics with friends or family members who possess different views?
"I generally try not to talk politics with family and friends that have different political views than me. When I do, however, I try to be logical and have a calm conversation. I can get quite passionate, though, so that can be difficult. Generally, the best option for me is to not get into it--especially with friends and family."
-Katie Arboleda, Grade 12
“I try to be respectful of everyone’s views even if we don’t agree.”
-Katie Soucie, Grade 11
"In this day and age, anything I say will be a touchy subject with lots of people, and half the time I’ll be crucified for voicing an opinion. I am always open to a civil discussion."
-Griffin Moulton, Grade 12
"I don’t usually bring up politics, but if it does somehow come up, I like to have a conversation about it and explain my personal beliefs without being too pushy or rude."
-Nicole Murphy, Grade 12
"Politics is something that shouldn’t determine who you are friends with. Me and my friends know each other’s opinions, yet instead of judging each other, we respect everyone’s views and don’t let it affect our friendships. As for family, it can be a little bit trickier. Family isn’t as afraid to judge, but I stay out of it as much as I can because I don’t like debating politics."
-Kevin Cronin, Grade 10
"It’s hard to communicate with people these days, especially if you have different political views. You should put debates aside and ask questions. Don’t be demanding; try and see where that person is coming from. If he or she decides to listen back, you can either have a peaceful conversation or a heated debate. If their beliefs personally offend you, or attack you in anyway, however, you do not need to respect them."
-Bucket Dude, Grade 10
"I would say that I am generally pretty polite in my disagreements with friends and family members. I state my opinion, but I don't spend a lot of time debating with people. And like many people, I tend to be closest to people who have similar values and philosophies to me."
-Dr. Dudley, DHS Staff
"I change the subject as quickly as possible."
-Mrs. Carten, DHS Staff
