The "Dedwood" boys lacrosse team on Senior Night.
The "Dedwood" boys varsity lacrosse team celebrated their six seniors on May 9th during the traditional "Senior Night."
The Marauders fought hard and gave it their all throughout the entire game, but they weren't able to pull out a win against Milton. It was a close game with a 9-8 loss that included a ceremony to dedicated to all the time and effort the seniors had given over the past four years of playing for the DHS and Norwood teams.
Prior to the game, the team gathered in the locker room to support the six seniors and they met their families on field for pictures.
The team has overcome challenges that no Dedham sports team has faced in recent times. At the beginning of the season, DHS had sufficient funding, but lacked the players to field a boys lacrosse team. On the other hand, Norwood High had the numbers but not the funding. Because of this, the coaches and athletic directors chose to try combining the former rivals, allowing the six amazing seniors from both schools to have their final season; hence creating the "Dedwood" team.
Captain TJ Harris has been a part of the DHS lacrosse team for the past four years. In that time, he has proven himself to be a very hardworking and determined player. TJ began playing lacrosse at the age of seven and plans to carry his passion for the game with him to college. TJ takes the position of the FOGO on the field (“face off get off”). When we asked TJ about how he felt about the season so far, he said, “We, as a team, have had our ups and downs, but we've done better than last year's Dedham team.”
Captain Ty Rutherford has also been with DHS boys lacrosse for all four years of high school. Through these years, he has shown to be motivated and a very good leadman for the team. Ty plays the position of attack on the right side. He has been playing lacrosse since the second grade. When asked how he felt about the senior night game, he said, “The game was eventful but a bad loss at the same time. Losing by such a slim margin right at the end of the game was very difficult to deal with. I'm glad that I got to play well in front of my family in one of the last games they will see me play in at DHS.”
The Dedwood boys alternated practicing at DHS and NHS. In the meantime, they became close to one another. The two Norwood captain’s, Jack Curran and Kyle Ledger, put in a lot of effort to make their senior year one to remember. They came into the season along with Dedham saying that this wouldn’t work out and little did they know they would be sharing a senior night with their former rivals.
When we asked the team how the seniors impacted their season, the overall response was that they were great role models and very hardworking, determined individuals. They pushed them to be their best and wanted to end this year with some wins.
Despite the loss, senior night was an overall success in celebrating the remarkable seniors that got them through the tough transition and the season that followed.
