Protestors rally in support of Brockton students.

The search for a solution to the violence at Brockton High School has led to mass media reporting.

BHS has approximately 3,900 students and only 206 full-time teachers. 11.5% of the population lives below the poverty line. 86.5% of the student body are minorities and/or students of color. Due to the low number of teachers, student management has devolved, and violence has become a problem. Teachers, parents, and students have all spoken out about the lack of safety.

There have been 80 police reports associated with the school in the last year. There are fights almost every day of the week and abusive drug use. Multiple staff members have been injured from breaking up fights.

An anonymous teacher stated, "Sadly, this year has killed me. I can't do it.” She went on to explain how she has developed symptoms of PTSD and anxiety.

One teacher who suffered injuries on both his arms after breaking up a fight, Cliff Canavan, made a statement regarding the conditions. “We are outmatched,” he said. “There are several fights every day throughout the school. Some of them are not too bad, some of them are quite horrific.”

The root of these problems stretch back to the heat of Covid, where the school district lost a significant  amount of money due to budget cuts. This, in turn, started a domino effect to the extent of which we see now.

In the the years since Covid, BPS has had to deal with even more more massive budget cuts, forcing 130 teachers layoffs. The result of fewer educators means that there are students sitting in a cafeteria all day without a learning a thing or any proper adult supervision. 10 of the 21 total schools in Brockton are now at the bottom 10% in the state.

Recently, school committee members have formally requested 20-30 national guard soldiers to patrol the school with the aim of reestablishing order on the campus.
