Science fiction author Connie Willis spoke and answered questions at the August 12, 2023 General Meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County. The meeting was conducted via zoom video conference.
Connie Willis has won more science fiction Hugo Awards and Nebula Awards than any other author. She has won in all four lengths of fiction: Novel, Novella, Novelette, and Short Story. She displays a remarkable range, from the grim plague novel, DOOMSDAY BOOK, TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG, and BLACKOUT / ALL CLEAR (one novel broken into two books by the publisher); the novellas The Last of the Winnebagos, The Winds of Marble Arch, Inside Job, and All Seated on the Ground; the novelettes Fire Watch and Death on the Nile; and the short stories Even the Queen and The Soul Selects Her Own Society.
Ms Willis had always wanted to be a writer but deceided to hedge her bets by teaching as her day job and writing at night. Despite having had one tale appear previously, it was not until GALILEO MAGAZINE published her story, Capra Corn, that she seriously pursued writing. Her 1982 capture of two Nebula Awards, for Fiew Watch and for A Letter from the Clearys, vaulted her into the ranks of Big Name writers.
THE ROAD TO ROSWELL is Connie's latest book. It is a comedic road trip with UFO-themed weddings, alien abductions, Men in Black, Elvis Impersonators, True Believers, and More. The book reflects her love of Westerns ("especially STAGE COACH"), the Hope & Crosby Road Pictures, and Screwball Comedies.
She talked about the UFO Museum ("It's beyond imagination. It's cheesy and it's wonderful!"), the Walker Aviation Museum, and the Ruswell Museum and Art Center, all in Roswell, New Mexico. Science fiction writer Jack Williamson was a dear friend. She related a Fred Pohl visit to Jack. The duo heard about a UFO sighting, investigated, and concluded it had been a weather balloon based on their wartime experiences.
Unlike many writers, our guest is an outgoing person. She relishes being Master of Ceremonies at science fiction conventions.
