The Science Fiction Association of Bergen County met at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River on Saturday, December 14, 2002. This was the annual Pot Luck Dinner / Holiday Party. There was no formal program, although a variety of videos were playing in the front room and the Wesley Room.
Every year we have one meeting with a distressingly low turnout, and this year it fell in December. Two things worked against us. The Philadelphia Science Fiction Convention was held the same weekend as the meeting, and the second Saturday fell on the 14th, which is as close to Christmas as we can get.
Those who did attend had plenty of food waiting for them.
Pamela Webber brought two London broils. Beverly Rey added veal stew. Roy Greenberg contributed vegetarian chili. Nancy Denker arrived with spicy tomato chicken. Charles Garofalo made Swedish meatballs.
The Nash women came with a tray of vegetables. Danny Adler brought a variety of biscuits. Robert Yeager arrived with a shrimp ring. Philip De Parto had both a rice dish and string bean casserole. Patti Ann Combs brought nachos. Carol Smith contributed vegetables and dip.
Desserts included an S F A B C ice cream cake by Joan Hardy, apple pie from Greg Roman, and bakery cookies from William Molendyk. Maia Leibowitz was armed with a cheese cake sampler. Denise Combs added a chocolate pudding pie.
These were only some of the foods on hand. A number of people contributed several items, even if only one is listed above.
The official video program was held in the Wesley Room, with ROCKY & BULLWINKLE battling Metal Munching Moon Mice. This was followed by episodes of the British sitcom, SPACED. Carol Smith set up a portable TV/VC in the furnished section of the Fellowship Hall and played a variety of shorts.
Although nothing actually went wrong, the below normal attendance made the event less festive than usual. By executive decision, the monthly attendance fee was waived. Renewal fees and "hey-I-didn't-bring-anything" fees were collected.
