It was back to our home base, the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey for the club's October 12, 1996 meeting. Editor/writer Jeff Gomez and colorist Chrysoula Artemis of Acclaim Comics gave an informative and entertaining presentation on the world of comic books, illustration, and multi-media entertainment properties.
Mr Gomez began his talk by relating how he got the tough guys of his neighborhood hooked on the Dungeons & Dragons game he Dungeon Mastered as a matter of personal protection. It not only saved him from being beaten up, but it also taught him the interpersonal skills of relating to a low brow audience. He was also able to recycle a number of elements from the game and base comic books, Magic the Gathering cards, and other money-making properties.
He talked about a number of different facets of his career, from starting up the gaming magazine, GATEWAYS, to designing a continent for Wizards of the Coast, to overseeing comic book and gaming characters become the subjects of computer games, to writing and editing comic books.
His funniest story was of having breakfast with William Shatner in the St Regis hotel and sharing a piece of French Toast with Shatner and INDEPENDENCE DAY star Bill Smith. The description of the meal with Shatner, his agent, attorney, and girlfriend was a scream. He also stated that Shatner has a keen business mind in their discussion of a new television series they have in development.
Chryousla talked about how technology is changing the artist's workplace. She was originally a hand colorist, but now colors on the computer. One positive is that her company has learned that it's easier to teach an artist how to use a paint program than to teach a computer professional how to develop an artist's sensibility.
Both guests were extremely gracious and said far too many interesting things for us to report here.
