It seems that each year we have one bad summertime meeting. This year it happened on Saturday, August 13, 1994 when both our speaker and a large part of our membership were no shows.

The meeting was held at Science Fiction, Mysteries & More! Bookstore, 140 Chambers Street, in Manhattan. Before the meeting, Nancy Denker, Philip De Parto, Mimi Mansky, Elizabeth Redly, and Barry Weinberger attended THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND which was part of the Film Forum's Annual Summer Festival of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.

There were a number of new people present who had come to hear our guest's talk. Unfortunately, most of them left when he did not appear. Those who stayed appeared to have a fairly good time.

Philip De Parto, after a bit of floundering, got a discussion going on the subject of favorite scenes from sf books and movies. It started slow, but soon built up a head of steam, with almost everyone contributing observations and opinions. Among those most active were Paul Shim, Anthony Tellado, and Alan Zimmermann.

Almost everyone, including three newcomers and late arrivals Steve Ferrara and Ernest Lilley joined the dinner troop to the Chinese restaurant across the street. There are few things that fans enjoy doing more than talking and eating, so things wound up reasonably well. A couple of people remarked how nice it was to have a meeting without a guest so that everyone could interact more and hear what other people thought were good books and movies.
