The Saddle River Valley Cultural Center was the site of the February 8, 1992 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County. As mentioned elsewhere in this issue, this was the last meeting scheduled for the center for some time, so it was good to go out on a high note.
After STAR TREK, THE NEXT GENERATION ended, we began to take attendance and dues. This took longer than usual as we had a number of newcomers to the Association. Also lengthening the process was the implementation of the new membership fee structure. The handout summarizing the new system was not present, so Sharon Archer had to explain the fiscal options. Thirteen people plucked down their $ 10.00 under the new system. The rest were either exempt as newcomers or chose to use the traditional system. Sharon and Carol Smith deserve our thanks for smoothly and efficiently handling that end of things.
Director-For-Life-And-Then-Some Philip De Parto then took the stage and began making announcements. He announced the changes listed on pages two and three. He asked for people to attend the Barnes & Noble Readings and people to write reviews. He outlined future plans for B&N, passed along a message from Katrina Strauch, mentioned a Writers Workshop by past guest Sharon Jarvis, described some upcoming televised science fiction series, and gabbed about at least a half dozen other topics. When his voice gave out, he implored Patricia Nash to read a couple of book reviews he had written.
Ginjer Buchanan was then introduced. Her presentation was divided into three parts. First she read her toastmaster speech from the 1989 World Fantasy Convention. This concerned the attack of a giant slug and how the assembled convention guests reacted to it. It was very silly and fun. The text of the speech can be found in the January 1990 LOCUS.
The second part of her presentation was showing covers of upcoming Ace Books and saying a couple of lines about each of them. We actually took a break halfway through this section as people were still feeling the lingering effects of Phil's Motormouth.
After a break of about twenty minutes, Ginjer resumed with the covers and plans of Ace Books. She then took questions from the floor for another half hour.
After Ginjer's presentation was over, most of the group moved into the other room to watch "Backwards," an episode of RED DWARF, a very strange British science fiction comedy. This was made possible by Ira Stoller, who just happened to have a video tape player in his car. Most people very much enjoyed the show, including little Mary Nash who has been talking about people moving backwards ever since.
It was shortly before midnight before we cleared out of the center. Sharon Archer, Paul Dellechiaie, Mary Ann Denny, Philip De Parto, Brian Keveney, Debra Matofsky, William Molendyk, and Carol Smith went out to the Horizon Diner after the cleanup.
The Association welcomes newcomers Sandra Cohen, Sue Hecht, Mary Lou Hopper, Jeanette Kappler, Joel Ryerson, Ira Stoller, and Barry Weinberger. Sandra Cohen, Jeanette Kappler, and Debra Matofsky won door prizes.
