Things were looking a little iffy for a while, but the November 11, 2017 General Meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County turned into a really good one. The first problem was that our original speaker canceled. Next, a number of potential replacement speakers proved to be unavailable. After that, a umber of our regulars indicated that they would not be making the meeting. Anticipating a low turnout, we moved the meeting to the home of Philip De Parto to save on rent, and went in-house to club member James Anthony Phillips to speak. Attendance turned out better than anticipated and Jim knocked one over the fences with his talk.
Both pre-meeting events went well, although the Writers' \Space Salon got off to a late start because Phil had not notified WSS moderator A J Bartholomew about the change of venue. The discussion started without her, but really kicked into gear after she arrived. At the same time, regular peals of laughter could be heard from the Ice Nine discussion of media science fiction led by Pamela Webber and Kathy Holusha a couple of rooms away.
Association member James Anthoy Phillips is an adjunct lecturer and instructor at Lehman College and Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. He is an expert on a number of aspects of film and music and has written for STARLOG, STAR WARP, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, and other publications.
Although Mr Phillips' primary focus is on the film end of the genre, he has had plenty of dealings with star writers over the years, including Isaac Asimov, Alfred Bester, Ben Bova, Stephen King and more. He talked about leaving King in mid-conversation because ALFRED BESTER had just walked into the room.
Our speaker's greatest enthusiasm is for film scores. He talked about James Bernard (Hammer Films), Wendy Carlos (TRON), Dominick Frontieri (THE OUTER LIMITS) , Candace Giaquinto (ROUGE ONE), Clint Manswell (THE FOUNTAIN), Gil Mille ("the music world's Harlan Ellison"), Mikios Rozsa (first motion picture score use of a themion in THE LOST WEEKEND), Frank Skinner (Universal Films), Hanz Zimmer and more.
To be continued on club website at 2017 - 11/2017 Meeting.
