The Annual S F A B C Holiday Party was held in the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center on Saturday, December 11, 1999. Things went pretty well, with a reasonable turnout of club members and a better than average variety of food for the potluck dinner.
The early arrivals to help set up the event included Vincent Carlucci, James La Barre, William Molendyk, Michael Piazza, Greg Roman, and Pamela Webber. Their help was greatly appreciated.
No one seemed to notice or care that we did not have a television turned on to the WB Saturday Night SF/Fantasy line up. Most people who attended arrived by or before our official dinner time of 7:15 PM, so we wre able to have dinner as scheduled.
Among the main dishes prepared were two turkeys (on roasted whole by Pam Webber, the other sliced for sandwiches by Mindy and Tim Taylor), Meatballs by Mike Piazza, Rustic Chicken Stew by Carol Smith, Barbecued Chicken by Paul Dellechiaie, Tuna Casserole by Kathy Holusha, and a Chicken and Vegetable Salad by Nancy Denker.
Side dishes included a Green Rice Casserole by Michael Doolittle, Spanish Rice by James La Barre, Mashed Potatoes by Pamela Webber, Glop (chopped meat and macaroni dish) by Helen Webber, and Spicy Chicken Wings by Robert Yeager.
Vegetables included String Beans with Garlic by Greg Roman, Buddhist Delight by Vincent Carlucci, Zucchini Sticks by Pat Nash, and a Vegetable Platter by Roy Greenberg.
Desserts included the ever-popular Cinnamon Rolls by John Upton (which started disappearing as soon as he walked in the door), Bakery Cookies and Coffee Cake by Pauline Alama, Bakery Cookies by William Molendyk, and Gingerbread by Pat Nash.
Those present consumed vast quantities of food with little waste. The only thing we were short on was soda and juice, a category which is normally overstocked.
Although there was no formal program, we did get things quiet enough to make a few announcements, etc. around 9:00 PM. We then set up for the optional video program in the auditorium section of the building as others continued conversations in the other area. The group split about 50/50.
...Sometime after midnight, Philip De Parto dragged the roughly 15 or so people still present for a bit of club business. This was to get feedback on a modification of our fee structure to permit expired members to attend the S F A B C Holiday Party without rejoining the Association. There was no formal vote on this, but the group sentiment seemed to be very firmly against altering our existing procedures. In the absence of a whole lot of you contacting Phil to the contrary, we will keep things the way they are.
This in turn led to a discussion of S F A B C finances in general. To be brief: during the past year we have moved from being slightly in the black to slightly in the red. The biggest controllable expense we have is the newsletter. There were numerous suggestions about altering the format of the newsletter or changing the fee structure to adjust for rising costs.
There will be no change in the status quo for the time being. We are already in the process of making changes to prune the mailing list, to convert people over to e-mail recipients, and to arrange for free printing more frequently. Until these changes have been fully implemented; we will not be able to determine if more radical changes are required.
Our thanks to everyone who helped with the set up, clean up, food preparation, and so on, not only for this month, but for this year. See you in Y2K!
