The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 1991 Philip De Parto:
The May 11, 1991 meeting of the S.F.A.B.C. was held in stately Yeager Manor in Paramus. The combination of an established author as our guest, good weather, an on-time newsletter, and a nifty location resulted in our best turnout since December of 1987.
Almost a third of the attendance was comprised of first-time visitors. These included Ira Donowitz, Charles Gehm, R T Gilroy, Joseph Kiminski, John La Barre, Mark Lucas, Christopher Nash, Betty Rotolo, Judy York and Jeannie Zoloter.
The meeting started late because the dinner crowd, which numbered 14, were late getting to the Yeager house. Roberta Rogow hawked her fanzines, Charles Garofalo reported on the Horrorthon Convention in Rutherford, Judy York and Charles Gehm showed transparencies of their artwork, Nancy Denker plugged Concoction, various people took turns playing pool, and the Yeagers put out their usual generous spread.
The traditional tour of the Yeager home was conducted by Robert (with help from his mother, Alice) before the meeting began. About 2/3 of the group went on the tour. Warren Davis commented that the house reminded him of the Forbes Museum with its organized clutter.
When everyone straggled back to the basement, the meeting was called to what passes for order in these parts. Pauline explained that she had begun her association with Andre Norton by sending her a Christmas card when she (i e, Ms Griffin) was a child. This led to a correspondence in which the aspiring writer kept the old pro abreast of her endeavors as an author and Ms Norton kept her up to date about works in progress. Over the course of a four day period in 1985, Ms Griffin made her first two professional sales, a short story to an anthology edited by Norton and STAR COMMANDOS to Ace Books.
When Ace Books indicated an interest in STAR COMMANDOS, they placed two conditions on the author. The first was that she write two sequels (the series eventually grew to nine books) and that she be marketed as something other than a female human being. Her options were to take a male pseudonym or use her initials. Ms Griffin chose to become P M Griffin.
There were a number of interesting points made about her writing. One was that no matter how improbable some of the incidents seemed, they all had a basis in fact. She mentioned a scene in one of her books in which the hero walked across the hardened crust of a river of lava as an example.
The final part of her presentation was a reading of the story "Trouble" from CATFANTASTIC. Although I liked the tale, a couple of people complained about the length of the story. I accept the blame, as I had her substitute this yarn for one a few pages less in length which I felt was not as good.
