The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 2015 Philip J De Parto:
The August 8, 2015 General Meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held at Barnes & Noble in Hackensack, New Jersey. Fantasy writer Tom Doyle was our speaker.
The Ice Nine discussion was quite lively. Topics included books by James Morrow, Brendon Sanderson, and Michael Swanwick; television series HUMANS and PENNY DREADFUL; various STAR WARS movies and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE; and web comics like Existential Comics.
Tom Doyle is the author of the novels AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN and THE LEFT HAND WAY, as well as a smattering of shorter works, most of which appear in his collection, THE WIZARD OF MACATAWA AND OTHER STORIES. The novels are secret history fantasies in which families of wizards, called craftsmen, have secretly shaped the history of the world.
Science fiction is, among other things, the literature of really cool ideas. Doyle's cool idea is that many literary classics of America: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES and more are fictionalizations of events which actually happened.
