The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 1989 Philip De Parto:

Writers Peter David and Marvin Kaye lead a far ranging discussion of Humorous Fantasy and other matters at the October 14, 1989 meeting. Authors Lionel Fenn and Esther Friesner were unable to attend due to family obligations that came up.

The writers discussed why they write in a humorous vein, what authors they liked, which ones influenced them, and how an occasional light moment can make a serious or horrific story even more effective. They wandered off into a reminiscence of fantasy writers they had read when they were growing up, which lead to a discussion of current young adult fiction, which led to Marvin Kaye relating some encounters with author Daniel Pinkwater which may not have been fantasies, but were certainly humorous enough.

Peter David was persuaded to due a reading from KNIGHT LIFE--the Lady-in-the-Central-Park-Lake scene. He also was prodded into repeating his friend’s theory that any two disparate elements can be joined together to become a T.V. series with the words: "They're Detectives." (She's his widow. She's his mistress. They're detectives. It's PARTNERS IN CRIME with Loni Anderson and Linda Carter.) His friend's idea is: He's a vampire. She's a werewolf. They're detectives. It's Thirst 'N' Howl.

The discussion lasted for several hours. We never even touched upon funny movies, classic fantasies, or favorites from the audience. Perhaps another time.

...Robert Hepperle, Thomas Purdy, Roberta Rogow and Chris Ward won free books. Both newcomers, Mary Levanthal and Drew Shanks, enjoyed the meeting enough to return in November.

Director Philip De Parto wishes to express his thanks to the many people who helped with the set up and clean up.
