Newsletter Account:
The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 1989 Philip J De Parto:
Depite the pre emption of the May newsletter, a crowd of 36 members and guests made their way to Upper Saddle River to catch our first regularly scheduled panel in almost two years ("'Twas a Dark & Stormy Planet: Bad Writing in Science Fiction, November 1986).
Topic of the evening's panel was: "Favorite Scenes in Science Fiction." Our panelists were writers Sharon Green and (moderator) David Nighbert, artist James Warhola, and Berkely Books editor Ginjer Buchanan. Film producer Ted Bohus was a last minute cancellation, being called in to help with a problem in the latest AMITYVILLE HORROR movie.
It was a wide-ranging discussion lasting for over two hours, with people both on and off the panel taking notes for future reading. Alfred Bester's THE STARS MY DESTINATION was the unofficial winner of the book with the most great scenes. Robert Heinlein and Harlan Ellison were among the other writers whose work was prominently mentioned.
Among the movies mentioned were ALIEN, ALIENS, BLADE RUNNER and DUNE. Strangely enough, the STAR WARS trilogy was mentioned only in passing, unless it came up while I was out of the room.
The discussion could easily have gone on at least another two hours. Televised science fiction was barely mentioned. Horrorific and romantic scenes were barely touched (Lovecraft's "The Color Our of Space" did cause many sleepless nights for one panelist, though). There were at least a half dozen scenes from Moorcock alone which I would have liked to toss into the discussion.
The sad reality, however, is that our guests had come from a distance and had other things to do the following morning. Ginjer Buchanan kindly offered to take care of getting the N.Y.C. contingent home safely, allowing Mr Phil the opportunity to join the diner gang.
The S.F.A.B.C. welcomes newcomers Dennis Mc Cunney, Kathleen Morrison, Joseph Morris, and Al Rodriguez to our ranks.
There was a small group of us who enjoyed a pot luck dinner at the Cultural Center at 5:15 PM. Thanks are given for food contributions by Elyse Adams, Philip De Parto, Charles Garofalo, Robert Hepperle, Mike Nelson, and Carol Smith, as well as Betty Kingsley who could not be there but made a generous donation.
Raffle tickets were sold for a twenty dollar gift certificate to Schiller's Bookstore in Paramus. Tickets will continue to be sold this month. Winners of door prize books included Sharon Archer, Leora Baeder and Roy Greenberg.
