The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 2005 Philip J De Parto:

The monthly meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held on Saturday, September 10, 2005. The meeting was held at the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey across the street from the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church where the group normally meets. The Church is undergoing some remodeling, so the Association will not return there until sometime in 2006.

Author David Mack, who has scripted or co written STAR TREK and other books, comics, e books, and television episodes was the featured speaker. There were also three pre meeting activities: a book sale, anime viewing, and a television discussion.

Guest speaker David Mack's latest project was as the author and developer of the bible for a new series of STAR TREK books set on the Vanguard space station. The series is concurrent with the original STAR TREK series, and Kirk and company make an appearance in the first book which is set immediately after the episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

One of the purposes of the series is to explain how the Federation went from being one of many emerging powers in the galaxy in the time of Kirk to being the dominant one in the time of Picard. The short answer is that the Federation stumbled upon the biotechnology of an extinct race which revolutionized the technology of the Federation, leaving its rivals in the dust.
