NEWSLETTER ACCOUNT

The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS COPYRIGHT 2016 Philip J De Parto:

There is a saying among airplane pilots that any landing that you can walk away from is a good one, and the October 8, 2016 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County had more than a little flavor of that to it.

Our scheduled speaker, Young Adult fantasy writer Sally Slater, came down with the flu and was unable to attend. This resulted in throwing together a new program at the last minute and getting our publicity out late, which further depressed our anticipated light turnout.

Patricia Nash, who normally runs our pre meeting Writers' Space Salon, and Barry Weinberger, who usually handles our pre meeting Ice Nine discussions, were both unavailable. Our fall-back moderators also had other plans for the evening. We scuttled both events and moved everyone into the Fellowship Hall where small groups held discussions around the tables which had been set up by the Methodists for their Sunday function. The gathering was intimate enough that when it was time for the meeting proper, we held it in the small classroom down the hall.

Our Salute to STAR TREK at 50 program led off with two videos. The first was an animated short from the College Humor site titled: WHICH IS NERDIER: STAR TREK OR STAR WARS? in which Jean-Luc Picard and Darth Vader pointed out the absurdities of each other's series. Next was STAR WRECK, COMMOTION PICTURE, an hour-long re-edit of the first STAR TREK movie with new music and dialogue dubbed in. This had been produced decades ago by fan Lynne Stephens and is an incredible technical achievement for its time. We had shown it once before and it still holds up.

Sam Person was the star of our show-and-tell segment as he demonstrated his stash of phasers, tri-corders and other TREK collectibles.

NOTES

Conclusion of Meeting Account:

We had some fun with an online TREK trivia quiz which Roy Greenberg brought up on his laptop. We concluded with three abbreviated rounds of STAR TREK Scene It. If you are unfamiliar with Scene It, this is a trivia game which plays scenes from the various STAR TREK series and then asks a question based on the clip. We had different teams for each of the three rounds, and somehow I ended up on all three winners.

All-in-all, a fun night. Chuck brought ice cream in memory of former club member Robert Yeager. Pam also brought some. Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way.
