The March meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held at the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey on Saturday, March 13, 1999. Science Fiction Illustrator Jael was the evening's featured speaker.

Jael came loaded for bear, with two portfolios, three trays of slides, four works-in-progress, a half-dozen completed paintings, numerous prints and other assorted paraphernalia.

The slide presentation contained examples of work she had done in every stage of her career. The oldest slides were from the years the artist had worked as a portrait artist in a variety of venues, from street fairs to Los Vegas hotel lobbies. Every picture had a story connected with it, many of which were highly amusing.

Jael uses a variety of mediums, alternating between oil and acrylic, with an occassional change of pace like watercolor. She likewise alternates between bookcover illustrations and private commissions. She especially enjoys the freedom of format that the commissioned works afford.

The climax of the show was a series of slides depicting an advertising poster commissioned by a magician. She guided the group through the process step-by-step without losing us in the details.

The meeting held a special ambiance for a number of us. Several members of the Association have known Jael since she moved to New Jersey 15 years ago, but her warmth and charm made you feel that you had been life-long pals whether you had known her for two minutes or two decades.

The proceedings were enlivened by Melinda Taylor's donation of some items she did not need. Pat Nash took the Jenga Game and the Dragon Mirror. John Upton got the Brass Door Knocker. Taras Wolansky received the Magnifier with Light.

Our thanks to Jael for the donation of some artwork, Mindy for some neat stuff, John Upton for the use of his slide projector, and everyone who helped with the set up and clean up of the event.
