Last month's general meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Writer Clint Smith was the Guest Speaker.
Before the meeting began, Charles Garofalo showed classic episodes of ASTRO BOY for the Japanese animation fans of our Anime Associates. Vincent Carlucci led a discussion of recnt genre television shows including LOST, ENTERPRISE, and ANDROMEDA at the gathering of The Final Frontier.
Clint Smith wore three hats as speaker. He is a technical writer who has written seven books about wireless telecommunications. He is the author of a tale of interplanetary adventure, INFUSION. He is also the publisher of that novel.
INFUSION is the story of the conflict between two groups within an alien civilization. One group wants to exploit the desperately needed recourses of Earth for their society, the other wants to maintain Earth's status as a preserve set aside for humanity. Like an Asimov novel, it is not a clash between good and evil per se, but a conflict of viewpoints.
Unlike most writers who go the self publishing route, Smith made a deliberate decision to release the book in a mass market edition. He made a great many interesting points on the economics of self-publishing. Perhaps the most revolutionary wa the idea of "reverse publishing" -- sneaking a book into a store and leaving it on the shelves. All in all, a fun meeting.
