The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 2001 Philip J De Parto:

The August 11, 2001 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held at Bennett Books, an independent bookstore in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Our guest was fantasy author Daniel Hood.

We had a small turnout for the Voice of Science Fiction, our pre meeting event. Philip De Parto read the death scene of Achilles in THE LITTLE HELLIAD by Janet and Chris Morris. Next up were two tales from Steven Boyett's TREKS NOT TAKEN, a collection of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION yarns not written by famous writers in some other timeline. Phil read "Moby Trek [abridged]" not by Herman Melville. Kate Landis found herself dragooned into reading "Trek 22" not by Joseph Heller.

Fantasy writer Daniel Hood was introduced, gave a talk, and answered questions. Mr Hood has written five fantasy mysteries featuring Liam Rhenford and his mini dragon familiar, Fanuilh: FANUILH, WIZARD'S HEIR, BEGGAR'S BANQUET, SCALES OF JUSTICE, and KING'S CURE. He has also written about a dozen short stories, many of which are posted, along with his unauthorized autobiography, on his website: http://www.sff/net/people/dan.hood.

Mr Hood comes from a family of readers. Birthdays and holidays were times of receiving books, or at least the money to buy them. It was natural that he would try his hand at writing. He said his first book was not published at the request of the EPA which considered it an environmental hazard.

He enjoys the way books can transport you to another time and place, citing THE NAME OF THE ROSE as a perfect example, but did not want to have to do all the research a historical requires. By working in a fantasy world of his own creation, he is able to pick and choose elements of various times and cultures and play with their interactions.

He is presently at work on something different, a science fiction mystery set aboard a starship. He was a gracious guest and we wish him well.
