The September 10, 1994 meeting of the S F A B C was held at its traditional meeting site, the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, for the first time in five months. Most people felt that while it's fun to wander around a bit during the summer, it's good to be back home.
There were 16 of us officially present at the shakedown meeting of the Final Frontier, the new STAR TREK club scheduled immediately before the Association's gathering. Philip De Parto started the conversational ball rolling. It was soon picked up by Mary Ann Denny, Steve Ferrara, Roy Greenberg, Carol Smith, Anthony Tellado, and the rest of the group.
The main topic of conversation was the status of STAR TREK: VOYAGER, the forthcoming TREK series. Information about the plot and cast of the show was discussed, and most people liked the basic premise. Anthony Tellado and Steven Ferrara were the main sources of information on this topic.
Publicity for the event was virtually non existent, so almost everyone present was an S F A B Cer. Carol Smith won the doorprize, THE MONSTERS OF STAR TREK book and announced news items about upcoming movies listed in SCIENCE FICTION CHRONICLE, Steve Ferrara contributed various tidbits found in THE PRYDONIAN RENEGEDE, and Philip De Parto read a STAR TREK QUZ which appears in the new issues of the ROC SF ADVANCE.
A few people headed to the basement at 7:00 PM to watch the STAR TREK, THE NEXT GENERATION rerun, but most stayed with the discussion upstairs. It was pointed out by Roy Greenberg that attendance at the first Final Frontier get together cuold not be considered typical of what future events would be like since there were really no outsiders present, but most people had no problems with the "go slow and patiently build" approach.
The regular meeting of the S F A B C commenced sometime between 8:00 and 8:30 PM. After the usual preliminaries, guest speaker Susan Wright was introduced.
Ms Wright is the author of SINS OF COMMISSION, a NEXT GENERATION novel. She read a few passages from the book to give people a taste of the work, explained what the book was about, and plans she had for future books. She was relaxed, friendly, and funny, answering questions about STAR TREK and other books which include ELIMINATING CLUTTER FROM YOUR LIFE and HOW TO TURN YOUR MAN INTO PUTTY IN YOUR HANDS. She was a lively speaker and joined us at the diner afterwards.
We got rid of about thrity books at the booksale. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the meeting including Sharon Archer, Paul Dellechiaie, Charles Garofalo, Roy Greenberg and Pamela Webber, and to Steve Piva for putting us in touch with Susan Wright in the first place.
We had a good sized post meeting crowd at the Horizon Diner that included Sharon Archer, Paul Dellechiaie, Philip De Parto, Elizabeth Grout, Matthew Marcus, Steve Piva, Robert Savoye, Carol Smith, Anthony Tellado, Pamela Webber, Susan Wright and Thomas Zych.
