The annual Holiday Party Pot Luck Dinner of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held on Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River. Charles Garofalo, Kathleen Holusha, and Ingrid Staats arrived early to help Philip De Parto with the set up. Their assistance was greatly appreciated.
The event got off slowly, with only Joe Havasy, Patricia Nash, Greg Roman and the above mentioned foursome present at the scheduled dinnertime start of 7:15 PM. Chuck heralded the official start of chow time by grabbing a serving spoon and pot lid and clanging them for the benefit of Joe and Greg who were downstairs watching JONNY QUEST.
People continued to drift in by the ones and twos for the next hour and one half and we wound up with a reasonable crowd. An accident which closed Route 17 North delayed a number of people.
Ingrid's Italian Meatballs in gravy were the hit of the evening. Other main dishes included Chuck's cocktail meatballs, Phil's ground beef, and two big platters of sandwiches and wraps brought by Bob Yeager and his four guests.
Kathleen brought a vegetable tray, Pat brought butternut squash and fruit, Pam brought cut fruit and Cool Whip, Steve Herr contributed salad and dressing and Phil added string bean casserole.
John Upton and Eileen Madison brought homemade cinnamon rolls--always a crowd pleaser, Phil brought a cake and apple pie, Nancy Denker added sugar free blueberry pies and the club larder contributed cookies and candy.
Ingrid brought rolls, Phil brought Rice a Roni and plain white rice, and Greg and Phil brought drinks. The club larder contributed coffee, tea, utensils, and more. I'm probably missing a few things from this tally.
The combination of newcomers and relative newcomers to the group, as well as the presence of some of our seldom seen members, added a lot of variety to the conversations, and table hopping to chat with other people was commonplace.
Somewhere between 9:00 and 9:30 PM we began screening JUST VISITING in the basement. The movie stars Jean Reno and Christian Clavier as knight and squire who are magicked from the 12th century to the 21st to save a lady and her descendant (both played by Christina Applegate) from nefarious plots. Howls of laughter at the slapstick periodically rose from the basement crew who were clearly enjoying themselves.
Our thanks to everyone who helped make it a fun evening.
