A mixture of threatening weather and post holiday blahs kept attendance at the January meeting down to one score and three ( 23 ). Those who did manage to attend were regaled by a two tier program.
The first program was a stunning slide show featuring winning costumes at several recent past Worldcons. An informative and entertaining commentary was maintained by projector John Upton, with occasional input by Susan Toker and others. The show was very warmly received and Phil De Parto plans to schedule an encore presentation at a later date.
After a break the films were started. Reaction to the amateur films of the Wombats was mixed. Only the very best of Super-8 films can usually stand on its own, and the absence of John and Mary Payne to fill in a bit of the background undoubtedly hurt. The tape wisely concluded with THEY STRIKE OUT, my favorite Wombat short, and set the stage for the Jittlov material.
Although Jittlov films have been a convention staple for years, many regular con goers to say nothing of the rest of us, have never seen such classic bits as SWING SHIFT. Jittlov is a one of a kind. If you are not familiar with his work, then words are not going to mean much, and if you are, then they are redundant.
Mike Nelson was out of the area, but did send a cake with Lynda Leibowitz to celebrate the birthday of Dennis Fox. I trust it was good, as it went too fast for me to get a bit, but then again, with fans you never know.
