Science fiction writer Russ Colchamiro spoke at the meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County on Saturday, September 9, 2017. The event was held at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. The turnout included five first-timers.
Carol Gyzander led the Writers' Space Salon discussion of Getting the Research Right and came equipped with a handout. Barry Weinberger led a wide-ranging discussion of genre movies, television series and more at Ice Nine.
Russ Colchamiro is a former journalist and current media relations professional whose life took an abrupt turn in his last year of college after spending a semester in England on an international exchange program, followed by a backpacking excursion in Europe. His experiences in backpacking inspired his first book, FINDERS KEEPERS, a somewhat raunchy work he described as THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY meets AMERICAN PIE.
Three large publishing houses were interested in the work, but ultimately all passed on it. It was released through a small press owned by a friend. Things went well at first. The book was favorably reviewed at PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY, had high retention scores on Wattpad, and was carried by Barnes & Noble. But a combination of the Great Recession, working a job with a long commute, doing all the promotion work for the novel, and finding time to write undercut his early success.
While selling books at science fiction conventions, our speaker forged connections which led him to the author collective, Crazy Eight Press. To be continued at 2017 - 10/2017 Meeting at sfabc.org.
