Newsletter Account:

The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 1996 Philip J De Parto:

The skies were dark, the rains teeming, there were power outages and the threat of tornadoes. In other words, it was a typical weather pattern for the second Saturday of the month.

The May 11, 1996 meeting was held in our usual digs, the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River. Prior to the meeting, the group conducted a book sale and the usual pre meeting activities.

Brian Gonigal filled in to lead the Final Frontier in a discussion of STAR TREK and BABYLON 5. He was helped out by a strong first-run episode of STAR TREK, DEEP SPACE 9.

Attendance was light for the Anime Associates with Patricia Malone. Her choice of GUNSMITH CATS as one of the selections was extremely well-received by those who viewed it.

William Mc Cay was a low-key, unassuming guest who could have titled his talk, "The Lighter Side of Writing Work-For-Hire." In Work-For-Hire, the author is writing stories for characters someone else has created. STAR TREK books are one example of Work-For-Hire; NANCY DREW is another; BATMAN yet a third. It is a wacky world populated by zany people. At one point, he talked about how he farmed out part of a book to his sub-, sub-contracted ghost writer.

Among the highlights of his talk were of working long hours on tight deadlines for two simultaneous deadlines. One was ghost writing for a gritty drug cop. The other was a lighthearted YA series featuring two cute sets of twins. He was afraid that he would have his tough guy say, "Let's look for clues!" or his cherubic youngsters utter an obscenity.

He passed around pencils of THE X-WIVES, a comic published by the Fantasy Factory, a publisher of STAN LEE'S RIFTWORLD series which features three well-proportioned ladies who acquired superpowers as a sexually-transmitted disease. As the pages of "Good Girl" artwork were passed around, Philip De Parto cautioned people to be careful not to spill soda on it. Mr Mc Cay agreed, saying "Yes, I would find it difficult to explain sticky pages."

He also talked about writing a forthcoming Spiderman novel for Marvel Comics, co-authoring CHAINS OF COMMAND, a STAR TREK, THE NEXT GENERATION novel, and a series continuing the adventures of the STAR GATE movie (which included some little-known facts about Egyptian mythology).

He was an interesting guest and a considerate person and accompanied us to East Side Mario's for food and conversation.

Nancy Denker, Debra Matofsky, and Taras Wolansky won free books. The Nashes dropped by as the meeting was breaking up to reclaim their television. Thanks to Charles Garofalo for the refreshments, Roy Greenberg for the tea and television, Pamela Webber for taking dues and the notes used in the write-up for the meeting, and to everyone who helped set things up or put things away.
