The January 12, 2019 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Fantasy / horror author Jeremiah Kleckner was our speaker.
A J Bartholomew led the Writers' Space Salon discussion of The Hat Problem. a lazy genre trope in which every member of a race, planet or cultue is treated as being monolithic in their attitudes and beliefs. Pamela Webber led the Ice Nine discussion of many things including the movies AQUAMAN and MARY POPPINS.
Jeremiah Kleckner is a self-published author who has written about Peter Pan & Captain Hook, superheroes battling monsters, swashbuckling space adventures, and Lovecraftian horrors stalking the streets of Hudson County. In his day job, he is a Seventh Grade teacher who coaches wrestling in Jersey City.
The Peter Pan / Captain Hook novels, written in collaboration with his friend Jeremy Marshall, are our speaker's best-know work. He considers the tale a nightmare for parents: a stranger, who really does not terribly much care for them, enters the bedroom of your children and takes them away. Our guest recasts Hook as the tragic, flawed hero of the tale, who was taken from his bedroom by Pan when he was 12.
Most of his books are designed to be read in an hour's time and are priced at $ 5.00. The Tome of Testaments series depicts inhuman deities and their mortal servants intriguing against one another. The first three volumes, Adversary, Beast, and Creature, have been published, with another 23 works in the planning stage.
Our speaker talked about what he reads, how he reads it, where he gets his ideas, how he plots his books, and how he produces them. For example, when he decided to read H P Lovecraft, he tackled the stories in the order in which they were written. To be continued on the SFABC website at 2019 - 01/2019 Meeting.
