The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 1992 Philip J De Parto:
The November 14, 1992 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River. Artist Thomas Kidd was the evening speaker.
Turn-out was again light for the pre-meeting activities. The Chess Tournament sponsored by the Dumont Chess Mates drew only a dozen or so contestants. The Asimov cancelled its meeting due to the small attendance. The Markland Sword Fighters had already announced that they would not hold practice due to the conflict with the Philadelphia Science Fiction Convention.
Philip De Parto, Charles Garofalo, and Patricia Nash were the only ones present at the 1:00 PM Writers' Critique Group when it started, although Steven Ferrara, Jacqueline Hecht, and Joan Higgins drifted in later.
Charles Garofalo had a short vampire tale, "The Evening Rounds," read and critiqued. Feedback was mixed. The rest of the session was devoted to an explanation and discussion of the plot outline of Patricia Nash's THE ILLEGAL ALIEN trilogy-and-then-some. The 5:00 PM Writers' Group never happened.
Although Tom Kidd has been doing bookcover illustration for more than fifteen years, his presentation was a slide show limited to his forthcoming art book, GNEMO. This will be an illustrated story of a young man's visit to another world and will be published by Tundra Press.
Gnemo is the name of his traveler. He starts off as a teenager in New York and travels through a "gate" which brings him to a world populated by humans and lots of weird flora, fauna, and terrain. The boy is a talented artist, and is able to make a living first as a portrait artist and later as a scientific illustrator in this world which has not discovered photography.
GNEMO is the story of the artist's travels about this world. Mr Kidd invents dozens of interesting life-forms, natural scenes, and manmade buildings and machines.
In addition to the slides, the artist brought down a half-dozen paintings. He also had copies of the TOM KIDD SKETCHBOOK FOR SALE.
Steven Ferrero, Jacqueline Hecht, and Patricia Nash won books. The Association welcomes David Cole, Warren Birnie, Sammie Mac Namara, Robert Pinkus, and Al Rasmussen. We hope that you will return.
Lonny Buinis set up his telescope on the front lawn after the meeting had ended and led a star watch. About a dozen of us headed out to the Horizon Diner afterwards. Our table broke up at about 1:30 PM.
