The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 1994 Philip J De Parto:
The July 9, 1994 meeting of the S F A B C was held at the Peking Duck House, a Chinese Restaurant in Closter, New Jersey. Our agreement assigned us their air-conditioned upstairs room at no charge in return for 30 dinners. We made our quota with a dinnertime turnout of 31 adults and 4 children.
Everyone seemed reasonably happy with the food and the comfort level of the room itself. Service was another matter. Two of our four tables received fairly prompt service. The other two tables were less fortunate, and one of those tables was quite unhappy about it.
As for the meeting itself, preliminaries were kept to a minimum. Artist Bruce Jensen, our primary speaker, brought down a half dozen original paintings and presented a slide show of his work.
Mr Jensen began with a series of slides of old bookcovers done by artists whose work he admired while growing up. Everyone agreed that this was a very nice touch. He then worked his way through works done while in school, in his portfolio, and as actual bookcovers.
Mr Jensen works in several different styles. His space scenes, for example, are competently enough handled but otherwise unremarkable. What really attracted comment were his "arty" paintings. A number of these were done for the Byron Preiss "The Next Wave" series of books published by Bantam Spectra. They were design-oriented and used a collage-like approach. Most people referred to them as surrealist, but I'm not sure I agree with that label.
After Mr Jensen was through, John Upton gave a short slide show on costumes appearing at Worldcon masquerades during the past ten years. His slides and accompanying commentary were well received by most of the room.
After the meeting was over, about twenty of us went to the Westwood Diner for coffee and. Our thanks to everyone who helped make the evening a success.
