Of course it snowed on January 8, 1994. That was a meeting of the S F A B C. Actually, the roads weren't bad at all in Bergen County, but anywhere to the north of us was pretty much a lost cause.

Anyone who did make it to the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center caught one of our better gatherings. Guest speaker David Mattingly is among the most articulate and entertaining of the artists in the science fiction community. He did a talk with a slide show, answered questions, and displayed five original paintings.

Mr Mattingly showed only a small portion of the over 300 book covers he has illustrated. Most of those shown had an interesting story associated with it. For example, he has immortalized his wife and one of his cats in different paintings. Other pictures feature in-jokes about art directors and fellow illustrators.

Our guest discussed his technique, showed a step-by-step composition of a painting, and answered questions about his philosophy of illustration. He also talked about his experiences in Hollywood where he worked on the movies THE BLACK HOLE, DICK TRACY, and FLESH GORDON II. Another area which he covered was the art/computer interface.

Bobbie Bauer, Jacqueline Hecht, Christopher Nash, and Jeffrey Salcedo won free books. Julia Hecht and Mary Nash behaved themselves reasonably well. Sharon Archer, Mary Ann Denny, Jacqueline Hecht, Brian Keveney, Robert Maloney, Matthew Marcus, William Molendyk, Josh Ross, Christopher Wamsley and (almost forgot) Julia Hecht made it out to the Horizon Diner afterwards.

Thanks to Nancy Denker, Mary Ann Denny, Roy Greenberg, Robert and Ann Orenstein, and Christopher Wamsley for help with the automotively challenged, to Steve Ferrera for help with the slide projector, to Roy Greenberg for the tea brewer, and to everyone involved with the set up and clean up.

The meeting was the ten year anniversary of the Association. In the early years of the group, Vincent Kurdyla videotaped many of our meetings, including our very first meeting which featured a slide show by David Mattingly in January of 1984. We showed about 5 minutes of his talk on the VCR.

We also read the attendance roster of that first meeting.
