The following account is reprinted with permission from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 2015 Philip J De Parto:

The May 9, 2015 General Meeting of the Association was held at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River. Author / commentator / reviewer Grady Hendrix was our speaker.

Barry Weinberger led a vigorous discussion of genre news and events at the Ice Nine gathering before the meeting. Subjects included the passing of STAR TREK's Leonard Nimoy and Grace Lee Whitney, the film THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, the television series GALAVANT, and other matters. This was held in the area normally used by Animation Associates, who in turn moved to the open classroom down the hall.

Grady Hendrix more than lived up to his advance billing. The guy is even weirder and more interesting than we had expected. The first half-hour or so of his presentation dealt with his experiences as a receptionist at The American Society for Psychic Research in Manhattan, which is the oldest such organization in America. The headquarters is in a gorgeous five storey brownstone across the street from The Dakota. Dan Aykroyd has long been a member of the group and the Annie Potts character from GHOSTBUSTERS is modeled, in part, upon one of Grady's predecessors.

The Society has nearly two hundred years of correspondence and other records of hauntings and other psychic phenomena. The wording in cases from the 19th Century is nearly identical to contemporary accounts. Our guest outlined the differences from "real" (i.e., reported) hauntings and those in fiction.

HORROSTOR, published by Quirk Press, is Grady's most recent novel. It is the story of a haunted Ikea, though the name has been changed to avoid litigation. This in turn led to an outline of the retail philosophy of Ikea, the differences between labyrinths and mazes, and why the store places its most capable employees as cashiers.

Grady Hendrix spoke about how he broke into publishing by working on a prank edition of THE NEW YORK TIMES, his move to Hong Kong, the establishment of the NYC Asian Film Festival, UNDER THE DOME, Shake art and much more. I hope to have additional detail at the 05/2015 Meeting page on the club website.
