PICNICING WITH DAVIS MAGAZINES
Our second picnic of 1988 was held on Saturday, August the 13th. Despite the 95 degree weather, things worked out pretty well.
There were twenty of us officially in attendance, not great, but certainly better than the June gathering. Despite the heat, it was actually quite comfortable under the trees as long as you took it easy. Even better, the bugs decided that it was just too hot to bother us.
Dan Adler, recently back from Israel, helped liven things up with a demonstration of sword fighting techniques using bamboo swords. As usual, he trounced all comers in chess and scrabble until Roy Greenberg showed up.
A group consisting of Phil De Parto, Jill Orovitz, Dan Adler, Chuck Garofalo, Joe and Mirielle Braginsky, and Mike and Tom Nelson went for a walk along the river. We gave up before we hit the duck pond, though.
Several people popped by for short periods of time and were not counted in the official attendance. The most unexpected of these was Nancy Cucci, up from Alabama, and modeling the summer maternity line.
Roger MacBride Allen encountered car trouble and had to bow out. The Battistas ran into massive traffic delays which caused the formal part of the meeting to start late.
William Battista did most of the talking. He touched on a number of subjects about science fiction publishing and how the sf magazines differ from the other eight periodicals in the Davis Group. Lisa Feerick and Anju Khubchandani also gave input.
The fall of night cut short the discussion, but the concept of an annual picnic with program seemed popular. On another front, the five dollar/year surcharge is the early leader among people voicing an opinion in August.
After the sunset, Mike and Tammy Nelson, Carol Smith, Dan Adler, Robert Hepperle, Nancy Denker, Chuck Garofalo, Anthony Pawlak and Philip De Parto went out to Cool Scoops for Ice Cream.
