The Science Fiction Association of Bergen County’s annual Holiday Party was held at the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey on Saturday, on Saturday, December 11, 2010. The event ran very smoothly. The difficulties with the heat which plagued the 2008 and 2009 gatherings were happily absent this year.

Two factors went a long way to keeping Director Philip De Parto saner than usual. The first is that a number of people showed up early to help with the set up. Grateful thanks go to Charles Garofalo, Roy Greenberg, Joan Higgins, Kathy Holusha and Greg Roman. The second is that, rather than crossing spatulas with Phil in their kitchen, Pamela Webber waited until Phil headed out before preparing the rice and London Broil.

Food was diverse and plentiful, but not ridiculously copious.

Main dishes included London Broil (Pamela Webber), fried chicken (Irene Evans), pizza (Robert Yeager), meatballs (Charles Garofalo), rotisserie turkey (John Jurich), sausage, pork and peppers (Ingrid Staats), chicken wings (Kathy Holusha) and cooked ground beef (Philip De Parto).

Side dishes included shrimp rings (Joan Higgins and Peter Barboto), acorn squash (Patricia Nash), pasta with vegetables (Roy Greenberg), Spanish rice (James La Barre), spinach dip (Karen La Barre), home made bread (Rich Herr), white rice (Pam) and noodle with sauce (Phil).

Fruits and vegetables included salad (Kathy), string bean casserole (Phil) and two big fruit platters (Lawrence Soria).

There were plenty of desserts including chips, dips, cookies and donuts. The three big crowd pleasers were beehive apple pie (Greg Roman), cannoli cake (George Galuschak) and cinnamon rolls (John Upton).

Three videos played in the basement over the course of the evening. We started with BE KIND, REWIND. This is not genre, but there is a very funny take on the movie GHOSTBUSTERS (as well as other films) in the flick. Later, little Grace La Barre was entertained by POPEYE cartoons. Last up was a RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL brought by John.

There were pleasant conversations about books, cats, children, movies, television and many other topics over the course of the evening. A good time seemed had by all.
