Susan Garrett, author of FOREVER KNIGHT: INTIMATIONS OF MORTALITY, addressed the meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County on Saturday, July 11, 1998. The meeting was held at Barnes & Noble in Nanuet, New York. Two episodes of the show were screened at the gathering of Armchair Odyssey before the meeting.
Ms Garrett had been a fan writer and editor for a number of years before being tapped to do a FOREVER KNIGHT novel. She got the nod because Sony wanted to do a series of tie-ins without spending enough to attract an established writer. Unable to afford professional talent, Ace Books editor Ginjer Buchanan contacted the community of FOREVER KNIGHT fan writers and solicited proposals. The author submitted three proposals, and Sony okayed one.
She told a number of stories to illustrate the mentality of Hollywood in general and Sony in particular. The funniest of these was about an LA woman who didn't understand the difference between an editor and a writer and who had no clue about the country being in different time zones.
Ms Garrett is a vampire enthusiast, with a large collection of neck-biting books, including some famously bad ones. She pointed out that early vampire works like DRACULA championed the vampire killers while later ones romanticized the monsters. She said that the tide may be turning with BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
The author also conducted a vampire trivia quiz and awarded a variety of prizes for the correct answer. Charles Garofalo, William Molendyk, Michael Piazza and Pamela Webber were among those who won, while newcomer Jennifer Musich won the top prize: a FOREVER KNIGHT script.
Susan Garrett was among the most splendidly entertaining speakers to grace our group. We were very fortunate to have her as a guest.
