Hal Clement, author of the science fiction classics MISSION OF GRAVITY and NEEDLE, graced the March 12, 1988 meeting of the S.F.A.B.C. In town to attend the New York Lunacon, Hal spent several hours discussing his career as a writer, with particular emphasis on his latest novel, STILL RIVER (Ballantine / Del Rey hc) and its sequel-in-progress (untitled).
Most of the time was spent discussing world-building, basic scientific tenets, and where, of course, he gets his ideas. In the case of STILL WATER, it was from Lester del Rey who, just to be contrary, insisted that it WAS possible to have a hollow world under certain conditions.
As expected, attendance was lighter than usual due, in no small part to Lunacon. The eighteen of us present were an odd mix including three newcomers, ... mainstays like Robert Hepperle and Anthony Pawlak, and oh-mighod-I-thought-that-you-had-moved-to-another-planet people like Brian and Reilly Keveney.
Roy Krupp was good enough to provide transportation for Mr Clement. Chuck Garofalo screened some old and rare cartoons which entranced everyone, including Hal. Three people won books. A sextet of us made it to the diner afterwards
