The August 10, 1996 meeting was held in the Peking Duck House Restaurant in Closter, New Jersey. There was a four part program consisting of dinner (optional), followed by a screening of "Starship Dow," the episode of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE 9 written by our guests, a solo talk about upcoming TREK book projects by John Ordover, and then a joint question and answer session by scriptwriters David Mack and John Ordover.

David revealed that he had been interested in pitching ideas for STAR TREK for a long time when he was introduced to John by a mutual friend. John was in touch with the Paramount people in Hollywood in his capacity as TREK book editor and fed David his read on how the West Coasters would receive a given idea. As feedback sessions continued, they decided to become collaborators, selling an unproduced episode in addition to "Starship Down".

David's basic idea was to redo DAS BOAT, a World War II German submarine movie, as a STAR TREK plot. Paramount layered in the two overarching themes they were developing for the show that year, Worf's growth as a Starship Officer and the Cisco/Kira relationship.

John talked about a whole range of new TREK book projects that was in the works. The breakout sales of the four part "Invasion" crossover had made Paramount very receptive to a number of projects John was pitching.

The most innovative of these is the creation of a new STAR TREK series in book form. A couple of the officers will be minor characters who appeared on one or another of the television shows, but most of the characters will be new creations. This offers writers much more flexibility having people grow, change, or die, as there is no TV show to demand a return to the status quo.

It was a very exciting meeting. The total adult turnout of 55 was one more than our previous best, and there is not room to recount most of what was discussed.
