The region was still reeling from the Blizzard of '96 earlier in the week and more snow was forecast for the weekend. Our scheduled guest speaker was reluctant to travel the treacherous streets of Manhattan. We agreed to cancel her presentation and make alternate plans.
The January 13, 1996 meeting of the Association was different than the usual gatherings. Rather than divide our smaller-than-normal group, we dropped the Anime videos before the meeting and concentrated on our STAR TREK group, the Final Frontier. Anthony Tellado brought everyone up to date on TREK news. At 7:00 PM, we watched the broadcast of the second part of a new two part episode of DEEP SPACE 9.
A discussion of that episode, as well as the TREK series in general, formed the first part of the S F A B C meeting. Someone made the very interesting observation that the Federation really hasn't been the same since the Borg destroyed half their fleet in battle Ever since that time, little cracks in the utopian future characterized by early episodes of STAR TREK, THE NEXT GENERATION, have been coming into view.
Tony also announced that he will soon give up his position as the moderator of the Final Frontier because of his work to get the SCI-FI TALK radio show back on the air.
A parade of people who run different activities for the clud were introduced and asked to summarize what they were doing. Sharon Archer talked a bit about the Special Activities Group. Patricia Nash spoke about the Writers' Critique Group. Philip De Parto covered the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Game, the Book Discussion Group, the Vampire Book Discussion Group, and the Author Discussion Group.
We also reminded everyone that we will have a Science Discussion Group running at Barnes & Noble in Nanuet, New York later this year. Paul Dellechiaie has agreed to moderate the group. Ben Ellison, Roy Greenberg, Donald Mc Farland, Patricia Nash, and Sharon Roberg indicated that they were interested in being involved. Including those who had earlier expressed an interest, we now have a nucleus of ten S F A B Cers to kick off the group.
Barry Weinberger announced that he had agreed to take charge of a new classic television/movie subgroup. This group is in the early planning stages, but the basic idea is to get everyone to watch the same movie or television episode of a classic science fiction video and then discuss it. Viewings may be held in a store, library, or member's home. Details have yet to be sorted out. Sharon Archer, Nancy Denker, Ben Ellison, Jacqueline Hecht, Robert Pinkus (who actually started the ball rolling on this idea), and Sharon Roberg all want in.
The next order of business was developing a presence on the World Wide Web. James La Barre and Ernest Lilley took the point on this one. Philip De Parto passed around the New Jersey Science Fiction Society's Web page and some other materials Mr La Barre had downloaded from the Net. James La Barre will head a task force consisting of he, Nancy Denker, Mark Hecht (volunteered in absence by his wife, Jackie), Don Mc Farland, and Barry Weinberger to work up some proposals.
Ernest Lilley eased himself out of that project to announce that he would run a new one. Mr Lilley is now editing SCI-FI TALK FREQUENCIES, a print companion to Anthony Tellado's forthcoming radio show. (Copies of the first, shake-down issue werer distributed free for commentary.) As the movie reviewer of the publication, Mr Lilley plans to regularly view new science fiction flicks and won't mind company while doing so. The Science Fiction Movie Premiere Group will assemble whenever something promising is due out. Details to be announced.
We held off on the scheduled massive book sale due to the weather, but Roy Greenberg brought in a couple of bags of new titles which moved briskly. Roy was a big help, brewing both hot chocolate and tea, and also providing cups for the group.
Thanks go to Sharon Archer for making arrangements with the Horizon Diner, Pamela Webber for handling attendance and acting as unofficial secretary, and everyone who showed up and helped out in any way.
