Artist Victoria Poyser Lisi, accompanied by her husband, Julio and children Astrid and Brian, was the featured speaker at the January 13, 1990 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County. She brought down her portfolio, prints for sale, and three paintings, one of which--"The Sinful Ones"--had been sold earlier in the day to collector Gerry de la Ree.

The first part of her presentation consisted of a slide show of about 45 paintings Ms Poyser Lisi works primarily in acrylic, but at times uses oil, watercolor, and egg tempra as her medium. Unlike some artists she knows (who do not work in the sf field), she attempts to select materials which will stand the test of time.

The artist graduated from the Evergreen State College in 1976 and began to do fan artwork shortly thereafter. She won Hugo Awards in 1981 and 1982 as best Fan Artist and decided to pursue a career as a professional sf illustrator. Unlike many aspiring artists, she received a cover assignment the same day she moved to New York. She has since painted over 100 book covers.

Ms Poyser Lisi is most clearly identified with fantasy illustration, especially books with strong women leads. She has illustrated books by Tanith Lee, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton, and many other writers.

Among the pieces she most enjoys are "Shadow of Shanarra", her personal overall favorite, "The Frog Prince", her favorite watercolor, and "The Night All Magic Went Away." She did the cover of the world fantasy convention, "World Tales," and has "Sea of Dreams," based on a dream she had, in the Delaware Art Museum Show.

After a twenty minute recess, during which a number of our members slipped away, the meeting resumed in a less formal atmosphere. The artist held up prints and described how the print process alters color values. She talked about her childhood--her father was a typical absent-minded professor, they had a house full of cats, no one ever threw anything away, they simply moved whenever they outgrew their storage space. In 1987 she became involved with a project with Tonka Toys, "The Supernaturals," and had many funny stories from that period of time to relate. Among them were the stringent security precautions taken by Tonka, with code names and restricted access areas and hush-hush security. Another had to do with learning that her toys were held up on Morton Downey Jr's show as an example fo the satanic influences upon our young people.
