Young Adult / Middle Grade fantasy writer Kate Milford spoke at the August 10, 2013 General Meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County. This was held in the second floor Event Room of Barnes & Noble in Paramus, New Jersey, a venue we had been pursuing for at least a decade. Ms Milford stepped in on short notice when our original speaker had to cancel, and we are deeply grateful for her appearance.
Our speaker is the author of two alternate history fantasy novels, BONESHAKER, and its prequel, THE BROKEN LANDS. They are set in a Bradburyesque America of small towns, sinister traveling shows, haunted crossroads, and other odd phenomena. Ms Milford has also self-published an illustrated novella set in this world "because I wanted to do a beautiful book." Ms Milford has plans for additional like novellas.
Kate Milford grew up in a literary household Her mother has log aspired to be a children's book writer, so far without success. BONESHAKER grew out of a children's book contest they had both entered. Writing for young people was not our guest's original intent, however (write up to be continued at sfabc.org).
