The Science Fiction Association of Bergen County met at the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 11, 2007. A presentation by small press editor/publisher Gary Lovisi capped an evening of enjoyable science fiction in a variety of formats.
Our Anime Associates' screening of GUNBUSTER began in the Wesley Room and then moved to the center section of the Fellowship Hall to work around a temperamental VCR. This in turn sent the gang watching the broadcast of MUTANT X and ANDROMEDA to the Wesley Room. The Final Frontier's discussion of Romulans proved lively and well attended, with Todd providing an eight page handout to those present.
Gary Lovisi is one of those individuals who wears many hats and is influential in more than one field. He has long been a fan of science fiction, mysteries, fantasy, and other genres, especially works with the flavor of the old pulps. He is the author of non fiction books and articles about collecting books and magazines and has written in several genres. He runs the annual New York Paperback and Pulp Collectible Exposition. He also is the editor and publisher of Gryphon Press, which publishes two periodicals as well as trade paperbacks of pulp fiction and related matters.
PAPERBACK PARADE targets readers and collectors of old paperbacks. The magazine publishes news, author interviews, and articles aout crime, spy, horror, and many other genres originally done as mass market paperbacks. HARDBOILED does crime fiction and has published tales by writers like Lawrence Bloch, Andrew Vachoss, and Ed Gorman.
Gryphon Books produces trade paperbacks in several genres. Science fiction writers published include John Russell Fearn, Gary Lovisi, Richard Lupoff, William F Nolan, E C Tubb and Jack Williamson. Shorter works have been issued in a "double" format.
Among the more interesting books he has published are E C Tubb's THE RETURN, which ends the Dumerest series (first English language printing), the Golden Amazon series by John Russell Fearn (featuring a space-travelling female DOC SAVAGE heroine), and SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE TERROR OUT OF TIME in which Sherlock Holmes and Professor Challenger battle the minions of Cthulhu.
Mr Lovisi focuses on neglected stories. Typically these appeared in smaller magazines like STARTLING STORIES. Much of Jack Williamson's fiction, for example, is long out of print, although Williamson is still an active writer in the field. THE RULER OF FATE & XANDULU, Number 29 in the GRYPHON SCIENCE FICTION REDISCOVERY SERIES, reprints stories originally appearing in STARTLING and in WEIRD TALES.
Gary Lovisi also organizes the annual Paperback and Pulp Fiction Expo which features book, magazine, comic and collectible dealers hawking their wares. Science fiction writers scheduled to appear at the September event include Ron Goulart, Barry Malzberg, John Norman and F Paul Wilson.
Mr Lovisi was an enthusiastic speaker and sold many of the books he brought to the meeting.
