The following account is reprinted from THE STARSHIP EXPRESS Copyright 2019 Philip J De Parto:

The Saturday, February 9, 2019 General Meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held in the Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Nicholas Parisi, author of the Rod Serling biography and critical appreciation, ROD SERLING: HIS LIFE, WORK, AND IMAGINATION, was our guest.

Our speaker began by talking about Serling's wartime experiences, then to his schooling and early work, which included radio and local television. Parisi stated that one of the biggest misconceptions about Serling was that he turned to science fiction as a vehicle to talk about contemporary issues indirectly after he was unable to do so in realistic television scripts. The reality was that Serling was quite familiar with the field and had written various science fiction scripts from his earliest days as a writer.

Serling's genre and notable non-genre work was discussed, as was NIGHT GALLERY and the TWILIGHT ZONE movie and successor series. More will be posted at the club website at 2019 - 02/2019 Meeting.
