Fantasy writer Alaya Dawn Johnson spoke at the Association's General Meeting on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Saddle River Valley Cultural Center in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Episodes of THE TWELVE KINGDOMS were shown by our Animation Associates. The Ice Nine discussion focused mostly on TV series and the interplay between movies and comic books.
Ms Johnson is the author of three fantasy novels (MOONSHINE, RACING THE DARK and THE BURNING CITY), two graphic novels, and a smattering of short stories, poems and non fiction articles which have appeared in STRANGE HORIZONS and other magazines and also in original anthologies like ZOMBIES VS UNICORNS.
Among the subjects the author discussed were the writing process, how shelving by Barnes & Noble and Borders has effected her sales, how e-books are changing the readership of books, work for hire, living in Japan, travel, non western fantasy, YA fantasy and favorite books, movies and television.
Alaya Dawn Johnson wrote her first book when she was six. Here teenage years saw her writing fan fiction. Eventually Ms Johnson sold a couple of books of her own creation. Agate Books published the author's first two novels. Agate is primarily an academic book publisher but decided to experiment in publishing fantasy. The first book came out in hardcover and was placed on the science fiction shelves. The sequel was placed on the African-American shelves and did not sell as well. This pattern of random shelving continued when she launched a new series with MacMillan. Borders shelved it as science fiction where it sold well. Barnes & Noble shelved it as mainstream and it sold poorly.
