The July 13, 1996 meeting of the Science Fiction Association of Bergen County was held at Barnes & Noble in Nanuet, New York. Writer Al Sarrantonio was the featured speaker. We were also joined by tropical storm Bertha, who decided to pay us a visit and leave us some wind and rain as a present.

Actually, things could have been a lot worse. By the time of the meeting, the wind and rain were gone and flooding was the worst problem. The weather kept some people away, but attendance was not too much below what we were expecting.

Al Sarrantonio is the author of over two dozen books in a variety of genres--mystery, western, horror and science fiction. He was selected to attend one of the Clarion Science Fiction Workshops where his classmates included Bruce Sterling, James Patrick Kelly, William Wu and Michael Conner. He left Clarion with plans to get married, a job in publishing, and a Writer's Block that lasted two years.

Working as an editor gave him an insight into the publishing game ("Editors are people, too, only less so.") that has been invaluable both in co-editing 100 HAIR RAISING HORROR LITTLE STORIES and in other places. He enjoyed writing the BABYLON 5 novel, THE TOUCH OF A SHADOW, THE WHISPER OF YOUR NAME, based on Neal Barrett, Jr's outline, and has a real empathy for Garibaldi. He is currently discussing doing another book, this time one of his own ideas, with Michael Straczynski.

Current projects include his FIVE WORLDS science fiction trilogy and a proposal for a MARS ATTACKS novel.
