Scene 10.09 - A Shot In The Dark
INT. Isis Station, Parkville Penthouse Suite - 9:25 p.m.
(Petey and Georgie-Boy enter a darkened suite. A lamp across the room lights, revealing a seated
TOM [SIMAK] in a comfortable, upright recliner. He's drinking a whiskey on ice, smoking a thick cigar. He sports a white shirt rolled-up at the sleeves, a loosened tie, black slacks and polished-but-worn wing-tip shoes. His jacket is folded and rests over the head of the recliner. He smirks and draws a gun from a shoulder holster and points it at the men.)
TOM
G'Evening. Where's your Moon Queen?
CAMEO 11
Not here. Just us nobodies. Uh, we'll be going now...
TOM
No, no. You stay put. Who are you? Moon cops?
CAMEO 11
Yes. (Rests hand on empty holster.) Who are you? You look familiar. You from Osiris?
TOM
(Slowly lowers his .38 revolver and places it on the table.) I'm asking the questions.
CAMEO 10
Yeah, moon cops. We're just here to change our clothes, we got no beef with you, Mister.
TOM
(Looks at the bed, where two suits are in dry-cleaner bags. Two pairs of shoes rest on the floor at the foot of the bed with two pair of socks.) You mean those two zoot suits they brought up? Be my guest. But change in here, where I can keep an eye on youse.
CAMEO 11
Here? In front of you? Can you turn around or something?
TOM
Not a chance. I've had gym class, boys. Don't be shy. I know whatcha got.
(The cops walk over to the bed and begin to quickly and immodestly change.)
CAMEO 10
(In white boxers:) You still haven't told us who you are and why you're here.
TOM
(Sips his whiskey, poured from the wet bar.) Where's Pensacola?
CAMEO 11
(In leopard-print briefs:) At the arcade, she's scoring us some Ava.
TOM
Is she now?
CAMEO 10
You talk too much, Petey.
TOM
Ava, huh? That's interesting. (Beat.) Name's Tom Andreo. I'm a private investigator.
CAMEO 10
Somehow that doesn't surprise me. Nice thirty-eight.
TOM
Thanks. It's an antique.
CAMEO 10
It's a snub-nose -- must have cost you a pretty penny.
TOM
You know your .38's. Pretty rare model. I even make my own bullets to save cash and I still hafta pay out-the-ass for casings.
CAMEO 11
Great, but... Whatchoo really want with the Moon Queen? You work for her or something?
TOM
No, I'm working for a friend. He's right. You talk too much -- you're asking questions instead of answering mine. Now, why does Pensacola wanna score some Ava? What's Pensacola want with smack?
CAMEO 10
Guess she's just wanting to trip a little for the Eclipse. That's why she's here, I guess.
TOM
Malarky. She's here to meet with the Dreamworx people. A secret meeting; soon.
CAMEO 11
We don't know anything about that. We're only here to retreive a fugitive.
TOM
I bet you are. David Donald Davis, right?
CAMEO 10
Yes, how did you know?
TOM
I have friends in high places.
CAMEO 11
We're talking about apprehension. (Tying tie.) What are you talking about?
TOM
Someone, or a bunch of someones, is messing with dreams. My dreams. Nobody messes with me unless I want 'em to. I think that somehow your buddy Pensacola is behind this, or perhaps it's really The Dreamworx people. Maybe they're all in it together -- maybe you two are incahoots as well... Right now, I don't know -- but believe me, I'm gonna find out.
CAMEO 10
You say someone's messing with your dreams? What dreams? Like old scripts?
SIMAK
Yeah, 'cept the funny thing is, I don't subscribe. It's got me a bit peeved to say the least. Your buddy Vypen seems to be putting herself where she don't belong -- in my head.
CAMEO 11
Our dreams have been real wack, too. Are you're dreaming stuff about us?
SIMAK
You, your partner, Davis, hell even Nancy Lee -- and she's dead. It's crappy acting in some weird montage of muck that somebody's got cooking in my brain and I'll be damned if I'm not going to get it to stop. (Replaces gun in its holster, downs drink and puffs his cigar. Stands, dons jacket.) Hurry up, boys, getcha shoes on. C'mon, fellas, let's go to the hub and see Lady Luna. I've got a few pointed questions for her to answer.
