Scene 3.19 - Into The Sunset
EST: EXT. Countryside Trail - Sundown
(TEX and COMMONWEALTH arrive outside the stables. We never see a horse in this movie until now. Now there’s a stable-ful.)
TEX RANGER
Well, we been married fo’ a whole day now, you ain't had no second thoughts?
COMMONWEALTH
Well, I have reconsidered one thing.
TEX RANGER
Darlin' you kin tell me. What is it?
COMMONWEALTH
About our honeymoon.
TEX RANGER
Glad you're bringing it up before we leave town. You don't wanna go to Colorado? We can have a honeymoon anywhere you want, Lady. I can take pictures wherever I go.
COMMONWEALTH
It's not that. It's just that, well, we weren't the only couple to get married.
TEX RANGER
True that.
COMMONWEALTH
And well, they kinda deserve a fancy honeymoon, too.
TEX RANGER
Well, with the casino deal lookin' like it's goin'-through, the chief and Summer will be rich-enough to go anywheres they want. And why, Rusty has so much old money, she kin take your pappy jus' about anywhere.
COMMONWEALTH
I mean, they're our friends. They were there for our brief courtin', and they were at the wedding. Shoot, they even got married right along with us.
TEX RANGER
Yes, but they have their own ideas. (Pats camera:) I just suggested Colorado because I hear it's got some great scenery. What is it you want me to do, Common?
COMMONWEALTH
(Beaming:) Oh, I knew I married the right man! (Shouts to behind a nearby building.) He said it's okay!
(SUMMER, POCACHICALOT, MARSHALL LAW and RUSTY enter.)
TEX RANGER
They're coming with us?
COMMONWEALTH
Isn't it the most? You, Mr. Texas Ranger, have made me the happiest wife this side of... the whole world!
MARSHALL LAW
Howdy, Tex. Or should I say, Son. Mighty kind of you to let us tag along to see the scenery wit' you.
RUSTY
Not that I'm going to give him much of a chance to look around.
(Kisses MARSHALL LAW.)
POCACHICALOT
Deputy's wife say you may need scout who speak Pawnee, Cheyenne and Arapaho to watch-out for you while going through hostile Injun territory.
TEX RANGER
Well, you know, I jus' might. After all, there ain't enough mojo in anybody's drink that kin make 'em talk right to everyone.
SUMMER RAIN
Plus, I'm not due to have our son for another seven and a half months. This might be the last chance I get to go anywhere for a while.
COMMONWEALTH
Son!? Oh, Summer, I'm so happy for you! You did the ring-test!
SUMMER RAIN
Yep. The girls did it right before leaving for their own little trip.
COMMONWEALTH
Really? Where are the girls going?
POCACHICALOT
Squaws and Whiskey Barr, Doc and the twins all went to the Utah Territory.
MARSHALL LAW
Utah? There's even more of nuthin' in Utah than there is in Kansas! Why on Earth would they wanna go there?
SUMMER RAIN
They got wind of some law there that allows polygamy. They all want to get married to each other.
TEX RANGER
Well, I, for one, am confused.
MARSHALL LAW
Doncha hafta be a Mormon or somethin’?
TEX RANGER
Heck, even them Mormons ain't doin' it no more.
POCACHICALOT
Either way, they're convinced a marriage contract from Utah will have to stick in Kansas.
MARSHALL LAW
Mebbe so. As chief enforcer and interpreter of the law, I can't see anyone lockin'-up the county's best deputies on account they're in love with the same man.
TEX RANGER
What, I'm not your favorite deputy no more?
MARSHALL LAW
Son, I'm runnin' for district court judge, and I'm makin' you sheriff.
TEX RANGER
Well, this is a surprise.
MARSHALL LAW
At my age, I don't have time for such a demandin' job. Not if'n I'm goin' to work-on-gettin' Common a little brother or sister...
COMMONWEALTH
Daddy!
RUSTY
You don't want us to have children, Common?
COMMONWEALTH
No! I mean yes! I'm all for it. I jus' didn't think-
RUSTY
That there's still fire under the kettle? Believe me, Common, I don't think it's proper to go into details, but after last night, I don't think that fire's goin'-out for kwytta-while yet.
TEX RANGER
Hey, Pops, if ev'ry 'uns all up and gone trav'lin', marryin' and honeymoonin' and such, who's mindin' the store?
MARSHALL LAW
Well, I really didn't have much choice.
TEX RANGER
You didn't.
RUSTY
He did.
TEX RANGER
Marsh! What shud-eye specta come back to?
MARSHALL LAW
I jus' temper-air-illy deputized him! It's only fer-a-cuppla-weeks now. Now get them fool worries outta yer head and jus' enjoy the ride-out. And the company o' your bride. There's nuthin' fer you to look back on and everything to look forward to...
TEX RANGER
If'n you say so. I jus’ hope you're right about all this.
MARSHALL LAW
Right as rain. I mean, it's only Wichita. Jus’ how bad could it ever git?
CUT TO: INT. Sheriff's office
(TODD SWEENY pushes his ten-gallon hat up on his head with an extremely-large-barreled revolver, snorts a long line of white powder on the desk with a rolled-up fifty-dollar bill that doesn’t have Ulysses S. Grant on it yet, brushes the excess off his shiny deputy badge, leans back on the chair and puts his boots on the desk, relaxed, smiling and comfortable. He pours a shot from a bottle with a skull and crossbones on the label, smiles, pours a shot into LUCKY’S bowl and downs the shot and chases it with a swig from the bottle. He puffs out two smoke rings. LUCKY laps-up his bowl and puffs a snort of smoke of his own...)
TODD SWEENY
(About as macho as it gets from a guy wearing chaps although he doesn't own a horse:) Yeah, Lucky, the sheriff asked me to watch things while he was away, I offered to look after the pups in the cave but the Chief says they gonna do jus’ fine on they own. Guess we got some time on our hands, boy. Looks like it's up to you and me to shape-up this cowtown. First, we'll hafta make sure that them there street lamps stay on 'til daybreak so folks kin see whilze theyz out late, then we'll git the saloon to start servin' on Sundays fer them folks that need-a belt after the sermon and why heck, that's not even menshunnin' what we're gonna do with all that there dynamite...
CU: Dog on floor, head centered
(LUCKY'S ear perks up inquisitively as he tilts his head. A circle wipe closes in on the dog's face, pauses, LUCKY barks and the wipe continues, bringing the scene to-)
SOUND: Explosion
