Scene 5.30 - Time Travel
EST: EXT. Himalaya Mountains - Day.
(MARY and CARMELLA watch the men below splashing in the pool. The women are wearing ominous, dark robes. CARMELLA is in HER third trimester, yet is still as beautiful as ever. BUD hikes up and joins the two robed figures.)
BUD
I set the traps just like you said, Mel. It's strange knowing I just set a trap that’s about to kill me. Are the men still there?
CARMELLA
They’ve just dropped a coin in the pool. I’ll have to remember to go back and get that.
MARY
So that’s how they lost their gattle-eengun. They left it behind.
CARMELLA
Time-travel is tricky. A lot can go wrong and create a conundrum, which isn’t good for anybody.
BUD
Mary and I have already gone into the temple. Have we already gone back in time?
CARMELLA
Yeppers, nearly two thousand years, where I've already gone back and saved you. Now do you trust me that I got all this worked out?
BUD
Yeah, I do. I wouldn’t have believed it, but here we are.
MARY
So what do you think about our proposal, Bud?
BUD
Yes. I’ll marry you. Both of you, if that’s what you both want.
MARY
Sure we’re not stepping on the Empress’ toes?
BUD
It’s purely physical, plus, lately she’s been spending most of her time with Chin. I guess she’s moved on.
CARMELLA
Good. A child shouldn’t grow up without a father, even if she has two mothers.
BUD
She?
MARY
She’s gonna be a girl, I’ve already named her. How does Zephira sound?
BUD
Fine. Just fine.
CARMELLA
Listen, kids. I’ve got a few errands to run while we’re here in this century. I’m going to send you back to the royal gardens. Get the Empress and tell her we all wanna be married and I’ll be back there in a flash, okay?
BUD
Okay. So there’s more things to do here? What else do you have to do in this century, Mel?
CARMELLA
Well, now that your old selves are gone, I’ve tied all the loose ends and got rid of all the nasty paradox that has been creeping-around my baby for a while now. Plus, there’s a lot of men in this time that need a little talkin’ to. Also, while I'm here, I think I might upgrade the palace a little.
MARY
It is in ruins! What happened to us?
CARMELLA
Eventually, you will re-locate to another palace that I created, hidden in those mountains... there. See the glimmer?
MARY
Oh, I do! I do! That’s wonderful!
CARMELLA
Yes, I’ll make that for our people after we have our first fight and I choose to be left alone in the temple for a year or so to cool off.
MARY
(Amazed:) We have a fight?
CARMELLA
No, it’s between us and Bud.
BUD
What did I do?
CARMELLA
It’s not what you did, it’s what you will do. And it’s not that big of a deal. You were just being a typical male and I was going through post-partum depression. Forget I said anything about it. I’ve always forgiven you. To me, it seems like centuries ago, even though it hasn’t really happened yet.
BUD
If there’s something I did, I want to make up for it before I do it.
CARMELLA
It was that kind of thinking that started the argument in the first place. Something about genetics or something. (Remembers; after all, she is a deity, so she dismisses it, not wanting to get angry again -- or is it angry yet?) Listen, forget it. If we don’t have the fight, I don’t build the other palace. If I don’t build the other palace, then that palace isn’t empty. If that palace isn’t empty, it doesn’t become ruins, then you don’t get brought back in time with Mary as it happened before. If you don’t go back in time, we won’t be here. See how confusing time travel can get?
BUD
Yeah, but what if I try to make sure-
BLACKOUT
CARMELLA
(Irritated, but not angry:) There you go, thinking again. See what you did? Everything’s gone.
MARY
What does this mean?
CARMELLA
It means you need to distract Bud until he gets those weird thoughts of having outer body experiences out of his head. I’ll fix it. I always do. Now, I’m sending you to the royal gardens while I put The Universe back together and build a new palace for our baby.
MARY
The palace is for our baby?
CARMELLA
Yes, what we got back there is no place for a child. Things gotta change.
BUD
I love you.
MARY
I love you, too.
CARMELLA
And I love you both. Now go, get on back to the royal gardens. I’ll be there in a second.
BUD
Okay. I love you.
MARY
I love you.
CARMELLA
Likewise. I love you, too.
